Background: The idea of making science more accessible to nonscientists has prompted health researchers to involve patients and the public more actively in their research. This sometimes involves writing a plain language summary (PLS), a short summary intended to make research findings accessible to nonspecialists. However, whether PLSs satisfy the basic requirements of accessible language is unclear.

The risk of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection from the mother's own milk (MoM) in neonates who are exposed to maternal SARS-CoV-2 during the perinatal period remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review to assess the association between MoM feeding and neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates who were born to SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant persons. PubMed Central and Google Scholar were searched for studies published by 14 March 2024 that reported neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection by feeding type.

Background: Kappa free light chains (KFLCs) are emerging as promising biomarkers for intrathecal B cell activity for diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS) through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. In this study, we evaluated the ability of KFLC formulas to identify the presence of MS and their agreement with the 'gold standard' of CSF IgG oligoclonal bands (OCBs).

Methods: A total of 233 patients were included in this study: 149, comprising 43 males and 106 females, had MS, and the remainder, 40 males and 44 females, had other neurological diseases (ONDs).

Background: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an endemic virus of North American cattle populations with significant economic and animal health impacts. While BVDV infection has a myriad of clinical manifestations, a unique and problematic outcome is the establishment of a persistently infected (PI) animal following in utero viral infection. While it is well established that PI animals serve as a constant reservoir of BVDV, the mechanism for the maintained infection remains unknown despite multiple theories.

In the UK, up to 700 people with HIV give birth annually; the majority are Black African migrant cisgender women. Infant-feeding decisions for parents with HIV are complex, requiring parents to weigh-up the small risk of HIV transmission via breastmilk and UK guidelines recommending formula milk, against strong personal and societal expectations to breastfeed. We explored this situation in a qualitative study.
