Glasses from the system NaO-AlO-SiO-BO-DyO are prepared with three different concentrations of the Dy ion-0.5, 1, and 2 at%. Glass-ceramics are obtained after thermal treatment of the parent glass at 580°С and 630°С during 2, 5, and 24 h. The crystallizing phases, the crystallinity degree, and the nano crystalline size are determined. The crystallizing phases after thermal treatment are NaAlSiO in two different modifications and NaBO. XRD analyses show the presence of third unknown phase in some samples. Emission and excitation spectra of the glass-ceramics show the characteristic peaks of Dy (F → H, F → H and F → H at 483, 575, and 668 nm, respectively). The yellow peak is dominating in all samples. The spectra show different intensity depending on the Dy concentration, temperature, and time of the thermal treatment. This result suggests that the emission color can be controlled by these three factors.

Laser scribed proton exchange membranes for enhanced fuel cell performance and stability.

Nat Commun

Department of Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Innovation Lab, University College London, London, UK.

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) offer solutions to challenges intrinsic to low-temperature PEMFCs, such as complex water management, fuel inflexibility, and thermal integration. However, they are hindered by phosphoric acid (PA) leaching and catalyst migration, which destabilize the critical three-phase interface within the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). This study presents an innovative approach to enhance HT-PEMFC performance through membrane modification using picosecond laser scribing, which optimises the three-phase interface by forming a graphene-like structure that mitigates PA leaching.

Perioperative hypothermia is a frequent clinical complication resulting from the cold environment of the operating room and prolonged skin exposure, leading to adverse outcomes and increased healthcare burdens. To address this issue, this narrative review discusses in detail the currently common warming strategies for perioperative hypothermia .Forced air warming (FAW) systems are widely recognized as the most effective intervention for maintaining core body temperature.

The convergence of sustainability and climate change has catalyzed the pursuit of inventive strategies for waste management and sustainable energy production. Hereby, we explored the effect of coupling biochar addition and thermal pretreatment in anaerobic mono-digestion and co-digestion of thermally pretreated thickened waste activated sludge (PTWAS) with food waste (FW). Six semi-continuous lab-scale digesters were operated for 161 days at various organic loading rates (OLR of 2, 3, 4 and 8 kgCOD/m/day) with and without biochar (BC) addition.
