Animal models of early life stress/adversity (ELS) have provided a foundation from which our understanding of the psychoneuroimmunology of childhood trauma has expanded over recent decades. Rodent models are a cornerstone of the ELS literature with many studies utilizing paradigms based on early life separation/deprivation protocols and manipulating the cage environment. However, no animal model is perfect. In particular, the lack of standardization across ELS models has led to inconsistent results and raised questions regarding the translational value of common preclinical models. In this chapter, we present an overview of the history of ELS rodent models and discuss considerations relevant to the ongoing efforts to both improve existing models and generate novel paradigms to meet the evolving needs of molecular- and mechanism-based ELS research.

Background: Evidence suggests that individuals with motor neuron disease (MND), a terminal illness, find enjoyment and social connection through video games. However, MND-related barriers can make gaming challenging, exacerbating feelings of boredom, stress, isolation, and loss of control over daily life.
Objective: We scoped the evidence to describe relevant research and practice regarding what may help reduce difficulties for people with MND when playing video games.

Chronic exposure to prenatal stress can impair neurogenesis and lead to irreversible cognitive and neuropsychiatric abnormalities in offspring. The retina is part of the nervous system; however, the impacts of prenatal stress on retinal neurogenesis and visual function remain unclear. This study examined how elevated prenatal glucocorticoid levels differentially affect retinal development in the offspring of pregnant mice exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS).

Purpose: Over the last 40 years, there has been an unusual trend where, even though there are more varied treatments, survival rates have not improved much. Our study used survival analysis and machine learning (ML) to investigate this odd situation and to improve prediction methods for treating non-metastatic LSCC.
Methods: The surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) database provided the data used for this study's analysis.

SUMMARY is a significant resident of the gastrointestinal tract of most animals, including humans. Although generally non-pathogenic in healthy hosts, this microbe is adept at the exploitation of compromises in host immune functions, resulting in life-threatening opportunistic infections whose treatments are complicated by a high degree of intrinsic and acquired resistance to antimicrobial chemotherapy. Historically, progress in enterococcal research was limited by a lack of experimental models that replicate natural infection pathways and the relevance of studies to the natural biology of the organism.

Objectives: Prior research indicates that jury duty can be distressing for some jurors. This study examined: (1) the influence of prior trauma characteristics (type, exposure, time since trauma), medical fear and mental health difficulties on stress and emotional responses during a mock trial and 1 week later; and (2) associations between early stress reactions during a trial on subsequent stress and emotional reactivity after exposure to skeletal evidence and 1 week later.
Methods: Mock jurors (n = 180) completed baseline self-report mental health measures, read a summary of a murder case and were then exposed to graphic skeletal evidence.
