Mobilise-D insights to estimate real-world walking speed in multiple conditions with a wearable device.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, The Catalyst 3 Science Square, Room 3.27, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 5TG, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the accuracy of a wearable device designed to estimate walking speed in individuals, including those with various health conditions and healthy older adults, over a 2.5-hour period in both laboratory and real-world settings.
  • - Results showed that the device's walking speed estimates had a mean absolute error ranging from 0.06 to 0.13 m/s, indicating good to excellent agreement with a multi-sensor reference system, particularly for participants without significant gait impairments.
  • - The findings underscore the importance of validating technology for clinical use, as accuracy varied with factors like task complexity and walking duration, suggesting the need for thorough testing before implementation in real-world mobility assessments.

A prospective cohort study of early postpartum etonogestrel implant (Implanon®) use and its effect on duration of lochia.

J Fam Plann Reprod Health Care

July 2016

Resident Medical Officer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Royal Hobart Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Background: Etonogestrel (ENG) implants (Implanon(®)/Nexplanon(®)/Implanon NXT(®)) are employed as contraception in early postpartum patients. Follow-up is often not conducted by the hospital prescriber. Little is known about duration of lochia, in a modern setting, and even less is known about the effect of ENG implants on lochia.

Background: Computer tailored, Web-based interventions have emerged as an effective approach to promote physical activity. Existing programs, however, do not adjust activities according to the participant's compliance or physiologic adaptations, which may increase risk of injury and program attrition in sedentary adults. To address this limitation, objective activity monitor (AM) and heart rate data could be used to guide personalization of physical activity, but improved Web-based frameworks are needed to test such interventions.

Background: This report describes the performance of a wireless electronic diary (e-diary) system for data collection and enhanced patient-investigator interactions during intensive insulin management in diabetes clinical trials.

Materials And Methods: We implemented a customized electronic communication system featuring an e-diary and a Web portal in three global, randomized, controlled Phase 3 clinical trials testing basal insulin peglispro compared with insulin glargine, both combined with prandial insulin lispro, in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM, respectively). We collected data during 28 weeks of study e-diary use for the report.
