The UK Biobank: A Shining Example of Genome-Wide Association Study Science with the Power to Detect the Murky Complications of Real-World Epidemiology.

Annu Rev Genomics Hum Genet

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have successfully identified thousands of genetic variants that are reliably associated with human traits. Although GWASs are restricted to certain variant frequencies, they have improved our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex traits and diseases. The UK Biobank (UKBB) has brought substantial analytical opportunity and performance to association studies.

For many marine tetrapods, vision is important for finding food and navigating underwater, and eye size has increased to improve the capture of light in dim ocean depths. Odontocete whales, in contrast, rely instead on echolocation for navigation and prey capture. We tested whether the evolution of echolocation has influenced the orbit size, a proxy for eye size, and examined how orbit size evolved over time.

Quantitative evaluation of the human vocal fold extracellular matrix using multiphoton microscopy and optical coherence tomography.

Identifying distinct normal extracellular matrix (ECM) features from pathology is of the upmost clinical importance for laryngeal diagnostics and therapy. Despite remarkable histological contributions, our understanding of the vocal fold (VF) physiology remains murky. The emerging field of non-invasive 3D optical imaging may be well-suited to unravel the complexity of the VF microanatomy.

Despite decades of exploration of the colloidal glass transition, mechanistic explanation of glassy relaxation processes has remained murky. State-of-the-art theoretical models of the colloidal glass transition such as random first order transition theory, active barrier hopping theory, and non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin theory assert that relaxation reported at volume fractions above the ideal mode coupling theory prediction φg,MCT requires some sort of activated process, and that cooperative motion plays a central role. However, discrepancies between predicted and measured values of φg and ambiguity in the role of cooperative dynamics persist.
