A food-borne outbreak with about 200 Umbilo cases occurred mainly between July and September 2024 in several European countries. Collaborative work between outbreak teams in Germany, Austria and Denmark, including epidemiological and microbiological investigations, allowed to rapidly identify rocket salad as the likely infection vehicle. Umbilo was detected in rocket salad, and later in baby spinach. The food isolates and clinical outbreak strain were genetically closely related. Both food items originated from the same company in Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Several neurodegenerative diseases, like Huntington's and Parkinson's, are linked to harmful long polyglutamine (polyQ) tracts.
  • Researchers explored the effects of erucin (ERN), a natural compound found in rocket salad, and sulforaphane (SFN) in broccoli, on polyQ toxicity.
  • The study found that ERN protects against polyQ-induced toxicity by working through the AMPKα2 enzyme and the FOXO transcription factor, and also showed potential for reducing α-synuclein aggregates in Parkinson's disease, suggesting further research in mouse models is needed to assess its protective effects in humans.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the impact of FMCC-B281 cells and their supernatant on the spoilage and survival of E. coli O157:H7 in fresh-cut salads, specifically romaine lettuce, rocket cabbage, and white cabbage, during storage.
  • - The researchers used modified atmosphere packaging and monitored microbial counts, pH levels, and conducted rapid analyses using FTIR and MSI to evaluate salad quality over time.
  • - Results indicated that while pathogen levels increased in lettuce and rocket cabbage, they stabilized in cabbage, and the presence of FMCC-B281 enhanced the salads' shelf life by 1-2 days compared to control samples.

This study was aimed at investigating the phytochemical profile and bioactivity of subsp. (Brassicaceae), a species from central-southern Sicily (Italy), where it is consumed as a salad. For this purpose, LC-ESI/HRMS analysis of the ethanolic extract was performed, highlighting the occurrence, along with flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, and oxylipins, of sulfated secondary metabolites, including glucosinolates and various sulfooxy derivatives (e.

For healthier human nutrition, it is desirable to provide food with a high content of nutraceuticals such as polyphenolics, vitamins, and carotenoids. We investigated to what extent high growth irradiance influences the content of phenolics, α-tocopherol and carotenoids, in wild rocket (), which is increasingly used as a salad green. Potted plants were grown in a climate chamber with a 16 h day length at photosynthetic photon flux densities varying from 20 to 1250 μmol m s.
