Ecology often seeks to answer causal questions, and while ecologists have a rich history of experimental approaches, novel observational data streams and the need to apply insights across naturally occurring conditions pose opportunities and challenges. Other fields have developed causal inference approaches that can enhance and expand our ability to answer ecological causal questions using observational or experimental data. However, the lack of comprehensive resources applying causal inference to ecological settings and jargon from multiple disciplines creates barriers.

Background: Computed tomography (CT)-guided hook-wire localization is currently the most commonly used technique for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules in clinical practice. With the increasing incidence of multiple primary lung cancers and the increasing occurrence of second primary lung cancers or local recurrences after lung cancer surgery, some patients need to undergo an ipsilateral or contralateral second pulmonary resection. In order to reduce the surgical difficulty of the second operation and accurately guide the surgical resection, preoperative localization of some nodules is necessary.

Improving physical and mental healthcare delivery to incarcerated patients and people with carceral histories provides an opportunity to improve health equity more broadly. This article provides a medical curriculum perspective led by the firsthand narratives of two women with lived expertise of incarceration in collaboration with interdisciplinary health professions students and faculty. Together we state that recognizing the humanity of individuals with carceral involvement precedes the ability to provide ethical or equitable healthcare: this humanity begins with students and the community sharing places and spaces together.
