Subthalamic nucleus oscillations during facial emotion processing and apathy in Parkinson's disease.

J Affect Disord

January 2025

Center for Functional Neurosurgery, Department of Neurosurgery, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by motor symptoms, but patients also experience a relatively high prevalence of non-motor symptoms, including emotional and cognitive impairments. While the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a common target for deep brain stimulation to treat motor symptoms in PD, its role in emotion processing is still under investigation. This study examines the subthalamic neural oscillatory activities during facial emotion processing and its association with affective characteristics.

Baseline gray matter volume associates with working memory performance after prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation.

Behav Brain Res

January 2025

Department of Head and Skin, Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, Ghent University Hospital, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium; Ghent Experimental Psychiatry (GHEP) Lab, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. Electronic address:

Working memory is crucial for daily life and is often impaired in neuropsychiatric conditions. Attempts to enhance it using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown mixed results, possibly due to large inter-individual variability. This study assessed whether baseline regional brain volume was associated with working memory performance following tDCS.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common pediatric psychiatric disorders and is frequently diagnosed and treated by pediatricians. Stimulant medications are the first-line treatment for ADHD but may not be a good fit for many patients due to side effects, inadequate treatment response, or family preference. Non-stimulant ADHD medications provide a useful alternative for patients that cannot tolerate stimulants, have an incomplete treatment response to stimulants, are at risk for stimulant diversion, or whose family prefers to avoid stimulants.

How well is the female population represented in clinical trials with infusion therapies for Parkinson's disease? A systematic review and metanalysis.

Eur J Neurol

January 2025

Parkinson and Movement Disorders Unit, Study Center for Neurodegenerative diseases (CESNE), Department of Neuroscience, Padua Neuroscience Center (PNC), University of Padua, Padua, Italy.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting both sexes, but differences exist between male and female in clinical manifestations, functional impact of symptoms and hormonal influences. Therefore, representativeness of females in PD trials indirectly determines the external validity of the clinical research in this field.

Objective: To estimate the representativeness of female in infusion therapy trials for advanced PD.
