Sexual communication often takes place in networks with multiple competing signalers being simultaneously assessed by mate choosers. Altered sensory conditions, such as noise and light pollution, can affect communication by altering signal production and perception. While evidence of sensory pollution affecting sexual signaling is widespread, few studies assess impacts on sexual signaling during rival interactions as well as mate choice, let alone whether urban and non-urban populations have diverged in their response. Here, we investigate the effects of urban sensory conditions on sexual communication in urban and forest túngara frogs (). We recorded dyadic vocal rival interactions and assessed mate choice with and without noise and light pollution in the lab. We show that urban sensory conditions can directly impact the intensity of rival interactions, differences between rivals, and mate choice, though changes were often in opposite directions for frogs of urban and forest origins. Moreover, we demonstrate that urban-induced changes in rival interactions can also indirectly affect how females choose between potential mates. Our study reveals origin-dependent direct and indirect effects of noise and light pollution and suggests local adaptation of sexual communication in urban populations.

Traditional high-temperature fabrication methods for ceramics suffer from significant energy consumption and limit the development of advanced ceramics incorporating temperature-sensitive materials. While bioinspired mineralization provides an effective strategy to realize the room-temperature preparation of ceramics, scaling up production remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a room-temperature procedure for the fabrication of large-scale ceramics by using the carbonation reaction of sodium alginate (SA)-doped γ-dicalcium silicate (γ-CS) compacts.

While technological advancements in treating electroplating wastewater continue, removing high concentrations of Ni and Co remains a challenge. Surface functionalization of clay has emerged as a pivotal approach for effectively removing heavy metals, rivaling intercalation modification in its effectiveness. This study investigated the adsorption performance and mechanisms of a phosphonate-modified layered double hydroxide material, employing batch experiments and simulation calculations to elucidate the impact of surface modification on adsorption behavior.

Self-Healing Yet Strong Actuator Materials with Muscle-Like Diastole and Contraction via Multilevel Relaxations.

Skeletal muscles represent a role model in soft robotics featuring agile locomotion and incredible mechanical robustness. However, existing actuators lack an optimal combination of actuation parameters (including actuation modes, work capacity, mechanical strength, and damage repair) to rival biological tissues. Here, a biomimetic structural design strategy via multilevel relaxations (α/β/γ/δ-relaxation) modulation is proposed for mechanical robust and healable actuator materials with muscle-like diastole and contraction abilities by orientational alignment of dendritic polyphenol-modified nano-assembles in eutectogels.

Background: Existing liquid biopsy assays for protein biomarkers of cancer are mostly based on antibodies (Ab) contributing unfavorably to their high cost. Easy to express and modify in vitro, nanobodies may be a cost-effective alternative to Ab.

Results: We show that serum HER-2/neu, a biomarker and target of aggressive HER-2/neu(+) cancers, can be accurately detected in a 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Encapsulating noble metal species in zeolites can improve the performance and efficiency of catalysts used in thermal and environmental reactions, particularly with Ru which is a cost-effective alternative.
  • The study developed a method combining hydrothermal processes and stepwise calcination to stabilize Ru clusters within MFI-type zeolite, leveraging special sites for better integration.
  • Results indicate that the unique environment created by the Ru clusters and MFI enhances catalytic activity for alkane oxidation even at low temperatures, while maintaining stability up to 1000°C, thus providing important insights for future catalyst design.
