The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Heart Valve Registry prospectively enrolled 1218 consecutive patients referred for surgery for valvular heart disease. A multidisciplinary management approach was used changing the plan from surgical to catheter based or medical in a significant number of patients. Rheumatic heart disease was the most common type of valve disease.
