The use of activated sludge models (ASMs) is a common way in the field of wastewater engineering in terms of plant design, development, optimization, and testing of stand-alone treatment plants. The focus of this study was the development of a joint control system (JCS) for a municipal wastewater treatment plant (mWWTP) and an upstream industrial wastewater treatment plant (iWWTP) to create synergies for saving aeration energy. Therefore, an ASM3 + BioP model of the mWWTP was developed to test different scenarios and to find the best set-points for the novel JCS.

Enhancing fish sludge bioconversion kinetics for nutrient recovery in aquaponics using a modified biological aerated filter with a novel media of polyhedral hollow spheres.

Nutrient recovery from aquaculture sludge is vital for promoting hydroponic plant growth and achieving near-zero solid waste discharge in aquaponic systems. Modified biological aerated filters (MBAFs) are promising because of the dual capabilities of aquaculture sludge collection and aerobic mineralization. However, the bioconversion kinetics, which is indirectly related to the packed media, need to be improved.

Foaming of semi-solid gel - An emerging concept in the food lipid sector.

Food Chem

December 2024

Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Electronic address:

The research on the foaming of semi-solid gel (oleogel) has recently attracted the attention of food scientists owing to its functional characteristics that make it a potential alternative to saturated fat and trans-fat used in food products. The oleofoams are prepared by heating the vegetable oil with an oleogelator followed by cooling to form a semi-solid gel and then incorporating air in the semi-solid gel to form an air-in-oil system having higher stability to deformation. Oleofoams provide new opportunities for the development of novel aerated food products free of saturated and trans fatty acids to meet the growing demand of consumers for healthy foods.

Achieving mainstream nitrogen removal by partial nitrification and anammox in the carriers-coupled membrane aerated biofilm reactor.

December 2024

State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control, School of Environment, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; Research and Application Centre for Membrane Technology, School of Environment, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 100084, China. Electronic address:

The integration of partial nitrification-anammox (PN/A) into membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is a promisingly energy-efficient and high-efficiency technology for nitrogen removal. The inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) remains as the most significant challenge for its development. In our investigation, we proposed a novel process to integrate carriers to MABR (CMABR), which combined the carriers enriched with anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) and partial nitrifying MABR system.

A novel approach has been proposed integrating sludge enrichment with intermittent gradient aeration to achieve partial nitrification (PN). Results indicated that this method suppressed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity while maintained ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) activity, achieving an 82.87 % nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) during startup.
