Tunable terahertz (THz) metasurfaces based on optical control are crucial in high-speed communication, nondestructive testing, and imaging. However, realizing independent optical tunability of multiple functions in the THz band remains challenging due to limitations in control materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a novel THz metasurface that employs two control materials combined with an electric-field-coupled inductor capacitor microstructure to achieve all-optical independent modulations of amplitude and frequency. Amplitude modulation is achieved through near-infrared optical pumping, reaching a maximum modulation depth of 94.42%. Broadband frequency modulation, spanning 0.21 THz, is accomplished using visible light pumping. The independent modulation function is owing to the odd-order nonlinear polarization characteristics of perovskite and the selective photon transition between the bottom Si island and the perovskite film. This work introduces a novel approach for all-optical independent modulation of THz devices, offering valuable insights for developing all-optical metasurfaces, intelligent light windows, and multidimensional ultrafast switches.

Background: Exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) is characterized by a reduction in pain perception and sensitivity across both exercising and non-exercising body parts during and after a single bout of exercise. EIH is mediated through central and peripheral mechanisms; however, the specific effect of muscle contraction alone on EIH remains unclear. Moreover, previous studies on electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) have primarily focused on local analgesic effects, often relying on subjective pain reports.

Vibrational resonance and chaos control in the canonical Chua's circuit with a smooth cubic nonlinear resistor is investigated by an analog circuit experiment and a dynamical model. By adjusting the amplitude and frequency of the high-frequency signal while keeping other parameters constant, the system exhibits a resonant peak in its response to the weak low-frequency signal. Notably, when the amplitude of the high-frequency signal exceeds the critical threshold, the system undergoes a transition from a single-scroll chaotic attractor to a double-scroll chaotic attractor, marking the emergence of vibrational resonance.

A novel variant of paired-associative stimulation (PAS) consisting of high-frequency peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and high-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) above the motor cortex, called high-PAS, can lead to improved motor function in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. In PAS, the interstimulus interval (ISI) between the PNS and TMS pulses plays a significant role in the location of the intended effect of the induced plastic changes. While conventional PAS protocols (single TMS pulse often applied with intensity close to resting motor threshold, and single PNS pulse) usually require precisely defined ISIs, high-PAS can induce plasticity at a wide range of ISIs and also in spite of small ISI errors, which is helpful in clinical settings where precise ISI determination can be challenging.

Multi-talker speech intelligibility requires successful separation of the target speech from background speech. Successful speech segregation relies on bottom-up neural coding fidelity of sensory information and top-down effortful listening. Here, we studied the interaction between temporal processing measured using Envelope Following Responses (EFRs) to amplitude modulated tones, and pupil-indexed listening effort, as it related to performance on the Quick Speech-in-Noise (QuickSIN) test in normal-hearing adults.
