Fluconazole (FCZ), an antifungal from the azole family, causes several detrimental effects in fish. In recent times, there has been a notable surge in interest regarding the utilization of Moringa oleifera (Mo) as a dietary antioxidant. This research aimed to evaluate the potential protective effects of dietary Moringa oleifera (MO) against the adverse impacts of fluconazole in the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Decoding host cell interaction- and fluconazole-induced metabolic alterations and drug resistance in .

Mycologia

September 2024

Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences, University of Sharjah, P.O. Box 27272, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated how fluconazole, an antifungal drug, affects an emerging drug-resistant pathogen, focusing on its metabolic changes, mortality rates, and the interaction with host cells.
  • Fluconazole treatment led to a significant reduction in pathogen cell numbers and altered the production of metabolites, some of which contributed to biofilm inhibition, while also activating metabolites that may promote growth.
  • The research highlighted the varying immune responses from different types of host cells and emphasized the need for further studies to better understand the relationship between host interactions and antifungal effectiveness.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a recurrent FDE with involvement of one finger and corresponding Beau's lines due to fluconazole use.

Therapeutics & Biomarker Discovery for Clinical Applications, Cell Therapy & Immunobiology Department, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, P.O. Box 3354, Riyadh 11211, Saudi Arabia.

Osteopetrosis is a rare inherited disease caused by osteoclast failure, resulting in increasing bone density in humans. Patients with osteopetrosis possess several dental and cranial complications. Since carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) deficiency is a major cause of osteopetrosis, CA-II activators might be an attractive potential treatment option for osteopetrosis patients.
