A Rare Case of Ewing Sarcoma of the Left Ethmoid Sinus With Orbital Extension.

Head Neck

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, New York, USA.

Published: February 2025

Background: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the ethmoid sinus with orbital involvement in an adult is very rare, with 16 reported cases in the literature. Immunohistochemical studies show small blue round cells positive for CD99 and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing reveals positivity for the EWSR1 gene.

Methods: A 38-year-old male with a diagnosis of ES of the ethmoid sinus presented with left-sided periorbital pain and edema, rhinorrhea, and proptosis. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical resection of the left skull base, and postoperative proton radiotherapy.

Results: The patient tolerated chemotherapy, surgical resection, and adjuvant proton radiotherapy well with resolution of proptosis, diplopia, and pain. Due to local recurrence, he is currently undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.

Conclusion: Our findings provide insight on the clinical presentation and appropriate management of extraosseous ES, specifically in the ethmoid sinus in the adult population.

Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon bone disorder affecting various parts of the skeleton, often affecting facial and cranial bones. In this case, a 10-year-old patient was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of the ethmoid sinus at an early age. The patient has experienced nasal congestion, snores, and worsening nasal patency since 2019.

Department of Clinical Anatomy, School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences, University of KwaZulu- Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Purpose: To explore available literature on PNS mucoceles and its distortions of craniofacial-orbital anatomy with regard to orbital bony defects and ophthalmic manifestations, highlighting the PNS mucoceles that mostly result in these distortions.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in June 2024 for available literature on the subject matter viz.; Google Scholar, PubMed and Medline, and Cochrane Library.

Age-stratified anatomical differences of orbital floor and medial orbital wall blowout fractures.

Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Oculoplastic, Orbital & Lacrimal Surgery, Aichi Medical University Hospital, 1-1 Yazako-Karimata, Nagakute, Aichi, 480-1195, Japan.

Purpose: To define the anatomical variance between orbital floor and medial orbital wall blowout fractures, and its change with age.

Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study analyzing data from 557 patients with isolated blowout fractures of the orbital floor or medial orbital wall. Axial and quasi-sagittal CT images were analyzed to compare radiologic data on orbital wall morphology between fracture site groups and among age groups.
