Hereditary hemoglobinopathies, particularly β-thalassemia, are highly prevalent in Azerbaijan, posing a significant public health challenge. In response, the Azerbaijani government implemented a national prevention program that includes mandatory premarital screening and prenatal diagnosis for at-risk couples, aiming to mitigate the impact of these diseases. This report covers the first five years of the program, beginning in 2015. Among 287 identified at-risk couples, 271 fetal samples were analyzed, revealing that 148 were carriers, 63 were affected, and 60 were unaffected. In nearly all cases, affected pregnancies were terminated. The most common mutations detected were Codon 8 [-AA], IVS-II-1 [G > A], and IVS-I-110 [G > A] in the gene. Since the program's inception, the birth rate of affected children has significantly decreased, making this established approach a valuable model for other regions facing similar challenges with autosomal recessive disorders.

This study aimed to assess the strengths, limitations, opportunities, and threats presented by diabetes-in-pregnancy. We review the improvements in maternal and fetal mortality since the advent of insulin therapy, evaluate current health challenges, and identify opportunities for preventing increased mortality due to diabetes-in-pregnancy. Prior to 1922, women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) of childbearing age were discouraged from becoming pregnant as the maternal and fetal/neonatal mortality rates were extremely high.

Objectives: Schistosomiasis (SCH) remains a public health challenge in Rwanda despite ongoing interventions. This paper provides an overview of Rwanda's SCH journey, highlighting progress made through mass drug administration (MDA), diagnostic advancements, and strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.
Methods: Since 2014, the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) test has been introduced alongside Kato-Katz (KK), improving mapping accuracy and detecting low-intensity infections.

Groundwater-dependent ecosystems in areas with industrial land use are at risk of exposure to a PFAS chemicals. We investigated one such system with several known PFAS source areas, where high and low permeability sediments (glacial) coupled with groundwater-lake and groundwater/surface-water interactions created complex 'source to seep' dynamics. Using heat-tracing and chemical methods, numerous preferential groundwater discharge zones were identified and sampled across the upper Quashnet River stream-wetland system in Mashpee, MA, USA, downgradient of Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC).

: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate whether children receiving long-term parenteral nutrition (LPN) are at risk of imbalances in selected trace elements. : Serum levels of manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine were measured in 83 children on LPN and compared with 121 healthy controls. Children with signs of infection or elevated C-reactive protein levels were excluded.

The present questionnaire study explores the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV), coping strategies, and psychological maladjustment for both female and male college students, as well as considering the effects of perpetrated IPV. College students are at risk for experiencing and perpetrating IPV, and coping skills may act as important risk and protective factors. In total, 333 (247 women, 86 men) undergraduate college students completed an online survey for research participation credit.
