Objective: Females continue to be underrepresented in academia. An analysis of gender representation among presidents of cardiothoracic surgery societies worldwide was performed.
Methods: A comprehensive search was performed to identify cardiothoracic surgical societies present worldwide and divided by regions. Respective Society's official webpage was searched to extract data on past and present presidents. Gender was determined and verified via publicly available online profiles. Proportions and respective 95 % confidence interval(CI) were calculated using Binomial exact calculation.
Results: A total of 34 cardiothoracic surgery societies were identified globally, of which only 16 provided information on past presidents in the public domain. A total of 563 past and current society presidents were identified. Women constituted only 16 [2.84 %; 95 % confidence interval: 1.63 %; 4.57 %] presidents. The first-ever women president was appointed in the year 2007 by the STSA during the 54th Annual meeting.
Conclusion: Stark lag persists in gender representation of presidential roles among the cardiothoracic societies globally.

The under-recruitment of historically marginalized populations into clinical trials thwarts equitable inclusion of individuals who could benefit from healthcare innovations and limits the generalizability of results. For decades, the Veterans Health Administration (VA) has conducted large clinical trials that impact clinical guidelines for veterans and civilians alike. Within the VA, women are a numeric minority, and recruitment of this population into trials is challenged by gender-specific care structures, distinct demographic characteristics, and mistreatment such as higher rates of military sexual trauma and harassment on VA grounds.

Background: The demographics of medical schools reveal a growing trend towards greater gender and underrepresented in medicine (UIM) representation among students, yet surgical residency lags behind. This study explores the demographics of first-year medical students (M1s) and their initial career interests.
Methods: A panel of faculty physicians and fourth-year medical students in surgical and nonsurgical specialties was held for M1s during orientation week.
When a speaker produces a pronoun, they must choose a form that carries the appropriate features. The current study investigates how speakers identify these features. We consider two possible routes: a conceptual-lexical route, whereby pronouns derive their features from the concept of the referent, and a syntactic route, whereby pronoun form is determined through a feature matching operation with the linguistic antecedent.

The Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) sustains some of the most productive marine systems on Earth. Within each of these systems, the upwelling process exhibits spatial and temporal variation resulting in marked differences in upwelling intensity and seasonality along extensive coastlines. The study of this variation is well needed, given the magnitude of the services provided by upwelling, and the impending impacts of global warming on EBUS.
