Electrospray deposition (ESD) uses strong electric fields applied to solutions and dispersions exiting a capillary to produce charged monodisperse droplets driven toward grounded targets. Self-limiting electrospray deposition (SLED) is a phenomenon in which highly directed, uniform, and even 3D coatings can be achieved by trapping charge in the deposited film, redirecting the field lines to uncoated regions of the target. However, when inorganic particles are added to SLED sprays, the buildup of charge required to repel incoming material is disrupted as particle loading increases. Due to its fibril gelling behavior, methylcellulose (MC) SLED can form nanowire morphologies. These wires, when used as a binder, can separate particles and prevent percolation. In this work, a variety of conductive and insulating particles are explored using patterned and un-patterned substrates. This exploration allows us to maximally load particles for high-concentration and highly controlled self-limiting functional sprays. This is demonstrated using TiCT MXene to functionalize an interdigitated electrode for use as a supercapacitor.

On-surface synthesis of functional molecular structures provides a route to the fabrication of materials tailored to exhibit bespoke catalytic, (opto)electronic, and magnetic properties. The fabrication of graphene nanoribbons via on-surface synthesis, where reactive precursor molecules are combined to form extended polymeric structures, provides quasi-1D graphitic wires that can be doped by tuning the properties/composition of the precursor molecules. Here, we combine the atomic precision of solution-phase synthetic chemistry with on-surface protocols to enable reaction steps that cannot yet be achieved in solution.

Probe Electrospray Ionization (PESI) is an atmospheric pressure ionization method that can be directly coupled with a mass spectrometer to allow ultrafast analyses without chromatographic separation and with minimal sample preparation. Using the particular case of cocaine and its metabolites in human oral fluid, the main objective of the present study was to test the feasibility of a new hybrid system combining a PESI source and a quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF). The best results were obtained for a sample preparation with a simple dilution of 100 µL of oral fluids in an ethanol / 10 mM ammonium formate buffer (50/50) and 10 µL deposited on a dedicated sample plate and introduced into the PESI source.

Surface reconstructions play a crucial role in surface science because of their influence on the adsorption and arrangement of molecules or nanoparticles. On the Au(111) surface, the herringbone reconstruction presents favorable anchoring at the elbow sites, where the highest reactivity is found. In this work, we deposited large organic perchlorinated molecules on a Au(111) surface via high-vacuum electrospray deposition.
