The extensive use of fossil fuels has sped up the global development of the world economy and is accompanied by significant problems, such as energy shortages and environmental pollution. Solar energy, an inexhaustible and clean energy resource, has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative. Light irradiation can be transformed into electrical/chemical energy, which can be used to remove pollutants or transform contaminants into high-value-added chemicals through photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, photocatalysis is a promising strategy to overcome the increasing energy and environmental problems. As is well-known, photocatalysts are key components of photocatalytic systems. Among the widely investigated photocatalysts, titanium dioxide (TiO) has attracted great attention owing to its excellent light-driven redox capability and photochemical stability. However, its poor solar light response and rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs limit its photocatalytic applications. Therefore, strategies to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO by narrowing its bandgap and inhibiting the recombination of charges have been widely accepted. Constructing heterojunctions with other components, including cuprous oxide (CuO), has especially narrowed the bandgap, providing a promising means of solving the present challenges. This paper reviews the advances in research on heterostructured CuO/TiO photocatalysts, such as their synthesis methods, mechanisms for the enhancement of photocatalytic performance, and their applications in hydrogen production, CO reduction, selective synthesis, and the degradation of pollutants. The mechanism of charge separation and transfer through the CuO/TiO heterojunctions and the inherent factors that lead to the enhancement of photocatalytic performance are extensively discussed. Additionally, the current challenges in and future perspectives on the use of heterostructured CuO/TiO photocatalysts are also highlighted.

The low separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole (e-h) pairs severely limits the activation of photocatalyts. One brilliant strategy is to construct a p-n type semiconductor heterojunction, which can establish an inner electric field to separate the e-h pairs with high efficiency. Here, for the first time, a cuboctahedral N-doped carbon-coated CuO/TiO p-n heterojunction (CuO-TiO@N-C) was designed and fabricated successfully direct calcination of a benzimidazole-modulated cuboctahedral HKUST-Cu with titanium-tetraisopropanolate absorbed inside concomitantly.

The performance of semiconductor photocatalysts has been limited by rapid electron-hole recombination. One strategy to overcome this problem is to construct a heterojunction structure to improve the survival rate of electrons. In this context, a novel g-CN/TiO/CuO double-heterojunction photocatalyst was developed and characterized.

The necessity to resolve the issue of rapid charge carrier recombination for boosting photocatalytic performance is a vigorous and challenging research field. To address this, the construction of a binary system of step-scheme (S-scheme) CuO@TiO heterostructure composite has been demonstrated through a facile solid-state route. The remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance of CuO@TiO, compared with single TiO, which can consequence in the more efficient separation of photoinduced charge carriers, reduced the band gap of TiO, improved the electrical transport performance, and improved the lifetimes, thus donating it with the much more powerful oxidation and reduction capability.

Three-dimensional (3D) CuO/TiO hybrid heterostructure nanorod arrays (NRs) with noble-metal-free composition, fabricated by template-assisted low-cost processes, were used as the photo-Fenton-like catalyst for dye degradation. Here, CuO NRs were deposited into anodic aluminum oxide templates by electrodeposition method annealed at various temperatures, followed by deposition of TiO thin films through E-gun evaporation, resulting in the formation of CuO/TiO p-n heterojunction. The distribution of elements and compositions of the CuO/TiO p-n heterojunction were analyzed by EDS mapping and EELS profiles, respectively.
