How to manage and avoid revision after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty?

World J Clin Cases

Published: November 2024

The article by Zhao presents a retrospective case series on the reasons for initial revision after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Clarifying the reasons that may cause UKA revision can further reduce the rate of revision UKA, focusing on gasket dislocation, osteophytes, intra-articular loose bodies, and tibial prosthesis loosening. This article provides valuable insights, not only by detailing the revision status of 13 patients who underwent revision after initial UKA but also by providing a comprehensive analysis of the incidence of revision after initial UKA. By reviewing and analyzing the causes, they established references for the early detection of risk factors for revision in clinical practice and for formulating surgical strategies and rehabilitation programmes. This commentary emphasizes the need for a meticulous understanding and an analysis of the revision rate following initial UKA and related management strategies. The implant rates, regional variation, and benefits of uncemented Oxford UKA have been explored, particularly in terms of bone preservation, appropriate surgical techniques, and weight management to control complications and improve patient prognosis.

The risks and benefits associated with simultaneous bilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) continue to engender contentious debate. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of simultaneous bilateral and unilateral UKA. A retrospective review was performed between 2019 and 2022 on 280 patients (130 simultaneous bilateral vs.

Background: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) procedures have become much more common in the United States in recent years, with >40,000 UKAs performed annually. However, it is estimated that 10% to 40% of UKAs fail and thus require conversion to total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In the field of total joint arthroplasty, robotic-assisted surgeries have demonstrated advantages such as better accuracy and precision of implant positioning and improved restoration of a neutral mechanical axis.

Protective effect of interferon type I on barrier function of human airway epithelium during rhinovirus infections in vitro.

Sci Rep

Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergology, Medical Clinic 1, University Hospital Frankfurt, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The airway epithelium provides a crucial barrier against infection with respiratory pathogens. This barrier can be impaired following viral infection, paving the way for bacterial superinfections. Type I interferons (IFNs) are important antiviral mediators, and inhaled formulations of these glycoproteins are considered a potential approach for the treatment of respiratory viral infections.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in elderly patients are frequently attributed to age-related altered pharmacokinetics and the complexities of polypharmacy to manage multiple chronic conditions, making elderly patients more susceptible to ADRs. The following is a case report of an 80-year-old female patient with systemic symptoms of chest pain, low blood sugar, mouth ulcers, and concentrates on peripheral edema due to nitrate vasodilator isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN). She had hypertension, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess whether China-made robot-assisted medial UKA can improve prosthesis placement accuracy and yield superior short-term outcomes compared with conventional UKA.

Methods: 50 patients who underwent initial medial UKA were included in this single-center, prospective, parallel, randomized, controlled trial. Preoperatively, patients were randomly categorized the robot-assisted UKA group and conventional UKA group.
