Electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to ammonia (NH) represents a potential solution for improving the disrupted nitrogen cycle balance. Unfortunately, designing efficient electrocatalysts for NO reduction reaction (NORR) remains a notable challenge, especially at low concentrations. Herein, a displacement-alloying strategy is reported to successfully induce the phase transition of Co nanoparticles supported on carbon nanosheets from face-centered cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure through Ru incorporation. The obtained RuCo alloy with hcp phase structure (hcp-RuCo) exhibits apparent NORR activity with a record-high Faraday efficiency of 99.2% and an NH yield of 77.76 µg h mg at -0.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode at a NO concentration of 1 vol %, surpassing Co nanoparticles with fcc phase structure and most reported catalysts. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the excellent NORR activity of hcp-RuCo can be attributed to the optimized electronic structure of Co site and lowered energy barrier of the potential rate-determining step through phase transition. Furthermore, the assembled Zn-NO battery using hcp-RuCo as the cathode achieves a power density of 2.33 mW cm and an NH yield of 45.94 µg h mg . This work provides a promising research perspective for low-concentration NO conversion.

Despite a lot of efforts devoted to construct efficient microbiomes, there are still major obstacles to moving from the lab to industrial applications due to the inapplicability of existing technologies or limited understanding of microbiome variation regularity. Here we show a domestication strategy to cultivate an effciient and resilient functional microbiome for addressing phenolic wastewater challenges, which involves directional domestication in shaker, laboratory water test in small-scale, gas test in pilot scale, water test in pilot scale, and engineering application in industrial scale. The domestication process includes the transition from water to gas, which provided complex transient environment for screening of a more adaptable and robust microbiome, thereby mitigating the performance disparities encountered when transitioning from laboratory experimentation to industrial engineering applications.

The translation of cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) into biogenic gene delivery systems is limited by relatively inefficient loading strategies. In this work, the loading of various nucleic acids into small EVs via their spontaneous hybridization with preloaded non-lamellar liquid crystalline lipid nanoparticles (LCNPs), forming hybrid EVs (HEVs) is described. It is demonstrated that LCNPs undergo pH-dependent structural transitions from inverse hexagonal (H) phases at pH 5 to more disordered non-lamellar phases, possibly inverse micellar (L) or sponge (L) phases, at pH 7.

Protein misfolding and aggregation are a hallmark of various neurodegenerative disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms driving protein misfolding in the cellular context are incompletely understood. Here, we show that the two-dimensional confinement imposed by a membrane anchor stabilizes the native protein conformation and suppresses liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and protein aggregation.

Passive temperature sensing systems based on the Internet of Things (IoT) present an efficient, reliable, and convenient solution for temperature monitoring with extensive application prospects and market value. This paper introduces a passive, battery-free, chipless, metasurface temperature sensing tag. The key insight is that the sensing tag uses vanadium dioxide ([Formula: see text]) to solve the problems of measuring distance, large size, and high cost related to active devices.
