Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a pivotal role in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease. Recent discoveries have highlighted the involvement of DNA damage and repair processes, particularly mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage, in these conditions. This commentary reflects on our recent findings, demonstrating the RNA/DNA binding protein fused in sarcoma (FUS)'s crucial role in maintaining mtDNA integrity through interactions with mitochondrial DNA ligase IIIα (mtLig3).

Diclofenac poses unique risks due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) defines and sets the Essential Competencies for Midwifery Practice and provides a framework for developing and reviewing midwifery curricula. This framework ensures that pre-service midwifery education designed for students leads to the demonstration of the required midwifery specific competencies. The development of the ICM competencies in 2024 confirms the timeliness of the effort of Rwanda to update its national curricula.
