Curative resection of multiple primary neuroendocrine tumors enabled by preoperative imaging: a case report.

J Surg Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterological and Transplant Surgery, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, 1-2-3 Kasumi, Minami-ku, Hiroshima 734-8551, Japan.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NENs) originate from neuroendocrine cells and predominantly occur in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and pancreas. Although the liver is commonly involved in NEN metastasis, primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors (PHNETs) are rare. Herein, we report a case of a 52-year-old female who presented with slowly enlarging, cystic, multiple PHNETs.

Precision medicine using molecular-target drugs in psoriatic arthritis.

Ther Adv Musculoskelet Dis

January 2025

The First Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, 1-1 Iseigaoka, Yahata-nishi, Kitakyushu 807-8555, Japan.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) presents various clinical manifestations, including skin lesions, peripheral arthritis, axial involvement, enthesitis, nail involvement, dactylitis, and uveitis. In addition, it causes a high incidence of lifestyle-related diseases and an increase in cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events. As the pathology of PsA has been clarified, molecular-targeted drugs targeting tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-17A/F, IL-17 receptor, IL-12/23(p40), IL-23p19, Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte Antigen-4 (CTLA-4), Janus kinase, and phosphodiesterase-4 have been developed and are widely used in clinical practice.

Background: Recent studies have highlighted the potential role of several long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD). This study investigated the expression profiles of lncRNA NEAT1 and lncRNA HOTAIR, and their target cytokine genes, IL-6 and TNF-α, in active and inactive BD patients.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from 25 BD patients and 25 age-sex-matched healthy controls (HCs).

Cost analysis of laparoscopic total versus open total gastrectomy in gastric cancer.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

January 2025

Department of Surgery, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Campus Charité Mitte and Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353, Berlin, Germany.

Purpose: Despite ongoing discussions concerning clinical equivalence of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) compared to open total gastrectomy (OTG) in gastric cancer (GC) surgery, complementary evidence regarding financial implications is sparse. The aim of this study was to compare hospital associated expenses and perioperative outcomes between both approaches.

Methods: Clinicopathological and financial data from 80 consecutive GC patients undergoing LTG or OTG between 2015 and 2022 were investigated.

Introduction: Population aging and increased cancer incidence have made the treatment of cancer in older individuals an increasingly important issue. Geriatric 8 (G8) is a screening tool developed to identify patients who would benefit most from a comprehensive geriatric assessment (GA). Previous G8 studies have involved older patients, but the age-related significance and usefulness of G8 is unknown.
