The enhancement of the molecular Raman signal in plasmon-assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) results from electromagnetic and chemical mechanisms, the latter determined to a large extent by the chemical interaction between the molecules and the hosting plasmonic nanoparticles. A precise quantification of the chemical mechanism in SERS based on quantum chemistry calculations is often challenging due to the interplay between the chemical and electromagnetic effects. Based on an atomistic description of the SERS signal, which includes the effect of strong field inhomogeneities, we introduce a comprehensive approach to evaluate the chemical enhancement in SERS, which conveniently removes the electromagnetic contribution inherent to any quantum calculation of the Raman polarization. Our approach uses density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT to compute the total SERS signal, together with the electromagnetic and chemical enhancement factors. We apply this framework to study the chemical enhancement of biphenyl-4,4'-dithiol embedded between two gold clusters. Although we find that for small clusters the total SERS enhancement is mainly determined by the chemical mechanism, our procedure enables removal of the electromagnetic contribution and isolation of the contribution of the bare chemical effect. This approach can be applied to reproduce and understand Raman line activation and strength in practical and challenging SERS configurations such as in plasmonic nano- and pico-cavities.

To move beyond an energy economy dominated by fossil fuel utilization, high-performance electrochemical cells must be designed for energy storage and conversion. Selective etching is a promising, cost-effective solution-processing method for the large-scale top-down production of nanomaterials for high-performance electrodes. This review outlines general methodologies and mechanisms by which selective etching can be applied to create nanomaterials, including various template-assisted, facet-selective, and electrochemical methods, as well as in-depth case studies of state-of-the-art research involving selectively etched nanomaterials for electrocatalytic and energy storage applications.

Despite the ubiquitous use of glasses, their simultaneous susceptibility toward scratch-induced defects and atmospheric hydration deteriorates their mechanical and chemical durability. Here, it is demonstrated that the deposition of a few-layer graphene provides unprecedented wear resistance to silica glass in aqueous conditions. To this extent, nanoscale scratch tests are carried out on graphene-glass surfaces via contact-mode atomic force microscopy with chemically inert and reactive tips.

Piezoelectric resonance sensors are essential to many diverse applications associated with chemical and biological sensing. In general, they rely on continuously detecting the resonant frequency shift of piezoelectric resonators due to analytes accreting on their surfaces in vacuum, gas or fluid. Resolving the small analyte changes requires the resonators with a high quality factor.

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide shows significant promise as an electrocatalyst in facilitating oxygen evolution reactions. But its development is hindered by low conductivity and insufficient cycling stability. Herein, the synthesis of a hierarchically structured heterostructure catalyst, CeO2@NiFe LDH, is reported through a straightforward two-step process involving hydrothermal treatment.

The ring-opening polymerization of bio-based monomer 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDO) can reportedly enhance polymer degradability. Butyl acrylate (BA)/MDO/vinyl acetate (VAc) terpolymers were synthesized via emulsion polymerization for their eventual application as pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). While using MDO in emulsion polymerization leads to a more sustainable process, it also presents challenges such as MDO hydrolysis, MDO ring retention, and inadequate MDO distribution.
