A commonly held assumption about memory for speech is that auditory memory is referred to only if phonetic memory does not contain the information needed for a particular trial. However, this assumption is in conflict with recent evidence [Crowder, J. Exp. Psychol.: Learning, Memory, Cognition 8, 153-162 (1982); Repp et al., J. Exp. Psychol.: Human Perception Performance 5, 129-145 (1979)]. The present study provides additional data to help determine how auditory and phonetic memory are used in a vowel discrimination task, and what happens during memory decay. Experiment 1 was conducted to determine whether performance levels decline at similar rates on between- and within-category AX vowel comparison trials when certain methodological problems are removed. This was confirmed. Experiment 2 demonstrated that in the AX task there is a vowel order effect, as Repp et al. found, but that this effect increased across interstimulus delay intervals, in contrast to their findings. The results can be accommodated with a model in which the memory for a vowel is represented as a small, bounded area within the vowel space, and in which memory decay is represented by the expansion of that bounded area over time.

The classical view is that perceptual attunement to the native language, which emerges by 6-10 months, developmentally precedes phonological feature abstraction abilities. That assumption is challenged by findings from adults adopted into a new language environment at 3-5 months that imply they had already formed phonological feature abstractions about their birth language prior to 6 months. As phonological feature abstraction had not been directly tested in infants, we examined 4-6-month-olds' amodal abstraction of the labial versus coronal place of articulation distinction between consonants.

Short-term memory for sequences of verbal items such as written words is reliably impaired by task-irrelevant background sounds, a phenomenon known as the "Irrelevant Sound Effect" (ISE). Different theoretical accounts have been proposed to explain the mechanisms underlying the ISE. Some of these assume specific interference between obligatory sound processing and phonological or serial order representations generated during task performance, whereas other posit that background sounds involuntarily divert attention away from the focal task.

Background/objectives: Normative perceptual segmentation facilitates event perception, comprehension, and memory. Given that native English listeners' normative perceptual segmentation of English speech streams coexists with a highly selective attention pattern at segmentation boundaries, it is significant to test whether Chinese learners of English have a different attention pattern at boundaries, thereby checking whether they perform a normative segmentation.

This study investigates whether listeners' cue weighting predicts their real-time use of asynchronous acoustic information in spoken word recognition at both group and individual levels. By focusing on the time course of cue integration, we seek to distinguish between two theoretical views: the associated view (cue weighting is linked to cue integration strategy) and the independent view (no such relationship). The current study examines Seoul Korean listeners' (n = 62) weighting of voice onset time (VOT, available earlier in time) and onset fundamental frequency of the following vowel (F0, available later in time) when perceiving Korean stop contrasts (Experiment 1: cue-weighting perception task) and the timing of VOT integration when recognizing Korean words that begin with a stop (Experiment 2: visual-world eye-tracking task).
