This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and blade element momentum (BEM) analysis of horizontal small-scale wind turbines under various parameters. Random airfoils such as the NACA 0012, NACA 0018, NACA 4412, S1016, S1210, S1223, and SC20402 are chosen, and the glide ratio is analysed. A Reynolds number of 100,000 is considered because of the small wind turbine design. The foil with the highest glide ratio is selected. Various notations are used to represent the chord and the twist angle of the blade, and the blade with the best chord and twist angle is chosen. The lift, drag, and power coefficients and power curves are analysed via the BEM. The power curves are evaluated for different air densities, and a higher value of power is obtained. Finally, via CFD, the SST model for turbulence is analysed for various angles of attack via Ansys Fluent for different air densities. The results are satisfactory compared with those of the CFD and BEM analyses. The Weibull distribution is analysed to understand the required frequencies for various wind speeds so that the installation of wind turbines can be made convenient in preferred areas with suitable wind properties.

Geometric description of a gliding grey-headed albatross () for computer-aided design.

Albatrosses are increasingly drawing attention from the scientific community due to their remarkable flight capabilities. Recent studies suggest that grey-headed albatrosses may be the fastest and most energy-efficient of the albatross species, yet no attempts have been made to replicate their wing design. A key factor in aircraft design is the airfoil, which remains uncharacterized for the grey-headed albatross.

With the increasing height and rotor diameter of wind turbines, bat activity monitoring within the risk area becomes more challenging. This study investigates the impact of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) on bat activity and explores acoustic bat detection via UAS as a new data collection method in the vicinity of wind turbines. We tested two types of UAS, a multicopter and a Lighter Than Air (LTA) UAS, to understand how they may affect acoustically recorded and analyzed bat activity level for three echolocation groups: Pipistrelloid, Myotini, and Nyctaloid.

The depletion of fossil fuel reserves, increasing environmental concerns, and energy demands of remote communities have increased the acceptance of using hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES). However, choosing an optimal HRES from economic, environmental, reliability, and sustainability aspects is still challenging. To solve this challenge, this study introduces a novel multi-objective optimization approach using the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and non-dominated sorting techniques.

Accurate statistical modeling of wind speed variability is crucial for assessing wind energy potential, particularly in regions with low wind speeds and significant calm hours. This study evaluates the Champernowne distribution as a novel model for wind speed analysis, comparing its performance with the two-parameter Weibull, three-parameter Weibull, and Rayleigh-Rice distributions. Wind speed data at 10 m hub height over three years (2021-2023) from Ben Guerir, Morocco, were analyzed using statistical metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Bias Error (MBE), Coefficient of Determination (R2), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC).

Inspection of wind turbine bolted connections using the ultrasonic phased array system.

Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, G1 1XQ, UK.

This study explores the inspection of bolted connections in wind turbines, specifically focusing on the application of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT). The research comprises four sections: Acoustoelastic Constant calibration, high tension investigation on bolts, blind tests on larger bolts, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) verification. The methodology shows accurate results for stress while the bolt is under operative loads, and produces a clear indication of when it is above these loads and beginning to deform.
