The COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on minoritised ethnic groups in the UK, including newly arrived Roma communities. Employing ethnographic and participatory methods, this study illustrates how systemic barriers, including precarious employment and overcrowded housing, coupled with strategies of identity concealment to avoid stigma, severely restrict access to healthcare among Bulgarian Roma communities in the UK. Drawing from fieldwork in Leicester and London, the research reveals how the pandemic amplified the vulnerabilities of Roma populations, directly linking the effects of the pandemic with broader sociopolitical dynamics, including the uncertainties and discrimination associated with Brexit. The findings point to the critical role of community, mutual and familial support networks as essential survival strategies. However, these social networks are also increasingly depleted, revealing the fragility and limits of informal communal resources. The study calls for the development of inclusive health strategies sensitive to the socio-economic and political complexities affecting marginalised communities in the UK and beyond.

An in silico redesign of the secondary quinone electron acceptor (Q) binding pocket of the D1 protein of Photosystem II (PSII) suggested that mutations of the F265 residue would affect atrazine binding. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutants F265T and F265S were produced to obtain atrazine-hypersensitive strains for biosensor applications, and the mutants were indeed found to be more atrazine-sensitive than the reference strain IL. Fluorescence and thermoluminescence data agree with a weak driving force and confirm slow electron transfer but cannot exclude an additional effect on protonation of the secondary quinone.

A search is reported for charge-parity violation in decays, using data collected in proton-proton collisions at recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018. The analysis uses a dedicated data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 , which consists of about 10 billion events containing a pair of b hadrons, nearly all of which decay to charm hadrons.

Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.
