Detection of the synthetic cathinone N,N-dimethylpentylone in seized samples from prisons.

Forensic Sci Int

August 2024

Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, School of Science and Engineering, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK.

Drug use is prevalent in prisons with drugs associated with depressant effects found to be more prevalent than stimulants. Synthetic cathinones (SCats; often sold as "bath salts", "ecstasy", "molly", and "monkey dust") are the second largest category of new psychoactive substances (NPS) currently monitored by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and are commonly used as substitutes for regulated stimulants, such as amphetamine, cocaine, and MDMA. N,N-dimethylpentylone (also known as dimethylpentylone, dipentylone, and bk-DMBDP) was detected for the first time in the Scottish prisons in seven powder samples seized between January and July 2023.

The emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and the number of new chemically diverse substances in the global illicit drug market have significantly increased over the last few years. Designer benzodiazepines are some of the most misused NPS worldwide, contributing to both nonfatal and fatal drug overdose cases. The use of desalkylgidazepam and bromazolam has recently emerged, and their prevalence has been internationally reported.

The ability to detect newly emerging substances is of great importance in reducing harms for people who use drugs. New psychoactive substances including novel benzodiazepines in the illicit drug supply have been linked to high rates of overdose deaths while complicating drug checking as an overdose prevention strategy. Paper-spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) has emerged as a novel strategy to rapidly detect trace components in street drug samples.

Desalkylgidazepam blood concentrations in 63 forensic investigation cases.

J Anal Toxicol

December 2023

Provincial Toxicology Centre, Provincial Health Services Authority, 655 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4R4, Canada.

Desalkylgidazepam, also known as bromonordiazepam, is the latest designer benzodiazepine to appear in postmortem blood samples in British Columbia. Our laboratory was first alerted to the presence of desalkylgidazepam in seized drug samples in May 2022, and the analyte was added to an in-house library shortly thereafter. Previously acquired spectra from routine death investigation cases were reprocessed using the updated library with the first presumptive identification of desalkylgidazepam occurring in a sample received in April 2022.
