Lack of sex-specific differences in the associations between the dimensions of great vessels and exercise performance in amateur cyclists. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: Endurance training enhances exercise capacity and triggers cardiovascular adaptations in both males and females. We investigated the relationship between the dimensions of great vessels and exercise capacity in amateur cyclists while considering sex differences.

Methods: Using resting transthoracic echocardiography, we measured the dimensions of the main pulmonary artery (PA), aorta, and inferior vena cava (IVC) in 190 participants, who subsequently underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) until exhaustion.

Results: The mean age of study participants was 30 years. Males (71%) exhibited a larger aortic annulus (approximately 3.5 mm, p<0.0001) and PA diameter (2.4 mm, p<0.0001) than females. No significant sex differences were found in expiratory or inspiratory IVC diameters. Males achieved greater peak exercise capacity, including workload, O2 consumption (VO2), and O2 pulse. Aortic and PA dimensions showed strong correlations with energy expenditure, workload, VO2, and O2 pulse. However, these correlations weakened when analyzed separately by sex. Multivariate linear regression revealed associations between CPET results, vessels size, and sex, with sex differences observed only in the intercepts-not in interactions between sex and vessels size. Despite males having better CPET results and larger vessels, the relationships between peak exercise capacity parameters and vessel dimensions were similar in both sexes.

Conclusion: Larger vessel dimensions (of the aorta, PA, and IVC) were associated with greater peak exercise capacity in amateur cyclists, with no significant sex differences in these associations.

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) provides excellent optical sectioning and doubles the resolution in all dimensions compared with wide-field microscopy. However, its much lower axial resolution results in blurred fine details in that direction and overall image distortion. Here we present 4Pi-SIM, a substantial revamp of IS that synergizes 3D-SIM with interferometric microscopy to achieve isotropic optical resolution through interference in both the illumination and detection wavefronts.

Background: The Mustard and Senning operations for dextro-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA) establish a biventricular physiology with a subaortic right ventricle (sRV). While prolonged QRS has been associated with worse prognosis in these patients, current echocardiographic tools fall short in adequately assessing the (mal)performance and function decline of the sRV during follow-up. The present study is the first to characterize Myocardial Work (MW) indices of the sRV in D-TGA patients after Mustard/Senning repair.

Group-level signatures in bonobo sociality.

Evol Hum Sci

Behavioural Ecology and Ecophysiology Group, Department of Biology, University of Antwerp, Universiteitsplein 1, 2610 Wilrijk, Belgium.

Humans show remarkable differences in social behaviour between families, groups, communities and cultures, whereas such group-level within-species variation in socio-behavioural propensities is typically overlooked in other species. Studies on intraspecific variation in animal social structures are needed to inform an evolutionary account of human sociality. Here, we study multiple independent bonobo populations ( = 6) in zoological settings to investigate if and how bonobos ( = 70) show group-specific signatures in sociality.

Background: Fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) in early life are associated with later obesity and cardio-metabolic disease. This study aimed to assess the associations of FM and FFM at birth and conditional FM and FFM accretion from 0-5 years with kidney outcomes at the 10-year follow-up.

Method: The Ethiopian Infant Anthropometry and Body Composition (iABC) birth cohort included term infants born in Jimma town, with a birth weight ≥1500 grams, and having no congenital malformations.
