Background: The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. The specific environmental impacts of neurosurgical operations remain largely unexplored.

Objective: To identify and review existing literature on sustainability and environmental impacts in the neurosurgical operating room, with an aim to assess scope and scale, and secondarily to evaluate potential interventions pertinent to neurosurgery.

Methods: PubMed, Medline, and Scopus were searched for English-language articles published through July 2023 topically related to operating room sustainability practices and environmental impacts, with attention paid to neurosurgery.

Results: A primary search identified 5 articles that specifically addressed sustainability issues within neurosurgery; 3 were observational studies, 1 was retrospective, and 1 was a prospective study. A further 12 studies (4 observational, 4 systematic reviews, 3 prospective, 1 a survey on barriers to practice adoption) were evaluated to access the broader scope of environmental impacts of surgery that may be relatable to neurosurgery. Key reviewed subdomains included resource conservation, waste production, and carbon footprinting.

Conclusion: There is a paucity of literature on sustainability practices within the field of neurosurgery. Here we identify the available evidence on the environmental impact of neurosurgical care and describe some avenues to reduce this impact by exploring surgical sustainability literature more broadly.

The aetiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are unknown and tend to manifest at a late stage in life; even though these neurodegenerative diseases are caused by different affected proteins, they are both characterized by neuroinflammation. Links between bacterial and viral infection and AD/PD has been suggested in several studies, however, few have attempted to establish a link between fungal infection and AD/PD. In this study we adopted a nanopore-based sequencing approach to characterise the presence or absence of fungal genera in both human brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Spherical tanks have been predominantly used in process industries due to their large storage capability. The fundamental challenges in process industries require a very efficient controller to control the various process parameters owing to their nonlinear behavior. The current research work in this paper aims to propose the Approximate Generalized Time Moments (AGTM) optimization technique for designing Fractional-Order PI (FOPI) and Fractional-Order PID (FOPID) controllers for the nonlinear Single Spherical Tank Liquid Level System (SSTLLS).

The bioluminescent European brittle star Amphiura filiformis produces blue light at the arm-spine level thanks to a biochemical reaction involving coelenterazine as substrate and a Renilla-like luciferase as an enzyme. This echinoderm light production depends on a trophic acquisition of the coelenterazine substrate. Without an exogenous supply of coelenterazine, this species loses its luminous capabilities.

Psychological distress, including anxiety or mood disorders, emanates from the onset of chronic/unpredictable stressful events. Symptoms in the form of maladaptive behaviors are learned and difficult to treat. While the origin of stress-induced disorders seems to be where learning and stress intersect, this relationship and molecular pathways involved remain largely unresolved.

Central to the development of universal learning systems is the ability to solve multiple tasks without retraining from scratch when new data arrives. This is crucial because each task requires significant training time. Addressing the problem of continual learning necessitates various methods due to the complexity of the problem space.
