As a newly discovered Janus van der Waals (vdW) material, semiconducting NbSeI offers several notable advantages, including spontaneous out-of-plane polarization, facile exfoliation to the monolayer limit, and significant out-of-plane emission dipole in second harmonic generation. These properties make it a promising candidate for piezoelectric and piezophototronic applications in highly efficient energy conversion. However, NbSeI is prone to oxidation when exposed to oxygen, which can severely limit the exploration and utilization of these intriguing physical properties. Therefore, understanding the oxidation mechanism of pristine NbSeI and its correlation with electrical polarization-an area that remains largely unexplored-is highly significant. In this study, the out-of-plane piezoelectricity of NbSeI is experimentally demonstrated, with a piezoelectric coefficient (|d |) of 0.76 nm V. Furthermore, by combining near ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), Time-of-Flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is revealed that the oxidation of NbSeI is self-limiting and independent of its electrical polarization, owing to the similar defect formation energies of Se and I atoms. This self-limiting and polarization-insensitive oxidation provides valuable insights into the stabilization mechanisms and expands the potential applications of out-of-plane piezoelectricity and other intriguing physical properties in Janus vdW NbSeI.

Metasurface holograms, with the capability to manipulate spatial light amplitudes and phases, are considered next-generation solutions for holographic imaging. However, conventional fabrication approaches for meta-atoms are heavily dependent on electron-beam lithography (EBL), a technique known for its expensive and time-consuming nature. In this paper, a polarization-insensitive metasurface hologram is proposed using a cost-effective and rapid nanoimprinting method with titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticle loaded polymer (NLP).

In this paper, a dual-band optically transparent square-shaped perfect metamaterial absorber operating in the frequency range from 2 to 4 terahertz (THz) is proposed. The structure consists of an indium tin oxide (ITO)-based split ring resonator (SRR) structure with additional splits and rectangular inner strips to form the top layer over the lead glass substrate. Perfect absorption is attained in the frequencies of 2.

This article introduces two transmissive metasurfaces applied to normal windows, aiming to improve the 5G outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) coverage. These windows can be utilized in various settings, such as vehicles or buildings. The proposed unit cells, designed to be wide-incident angle and polarization insensitive, are implemented in both single-glazing and double-glazing glasses, arranged in a periodic structure to form the transmission surfaces.

Tunable Broadband Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Based on Vanadium Dioxide and Graphene.

Micromachines (Basel)

August 2023

China Key Laboratory of Micro/Nano Devices and Systems, Ministry of Education, North University of China, Taiyuan 030051, China.

We propose a dynamically tunable ultra-broadband terahertz metamaterial absorber, which was based on graphene and vanadium oxide (VO) and numerically demonstrated. The excellent absorption bandwidth almost entirely greater than 90% was as wide as 6.35 THz from 2.
