The presence of dyes and heavy metals in wastewater represents a significant environmental and public health hazard, necessitating the development of efficient materials for their removal. In this study, we modified hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN-H) and combined it with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) by using an electrostatic spinning technique to fabricate composite nanofibrous membranes for water treatment applications. The resulting PAN-H/β-CD nanofiber membranes exhibit spindle-shaped fibers and porous structures with a high density of charged functional groups, which significantly enhance their selective adsorption capacity compared to pure PAN fibers. Furthermore, post-treatment with a sodium bicarbonate solution further improved this capacity, resulting in the membranes demonstrating a remarkable adsorption efficiency for cationic dyes. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 216.94 mg/g for methylene blue (MB), 471.59 mg/g for malachite green (MG), 299 mg/g for crystal violet (CV), and 43.95 mg/g for copper ions. The selective adsorption of these positively charged contaminants, particularly cationic dyes and metallic copper, indicates that PAN-H/β-CD membranes have significant potential for the treatment of wastewater containing similar pollutants.

This study investigates simple acetylenes substituted with phenylurea as a constant H-bonding unit (Alk-R) and varied hydrophobic units (R = H, Phenyl (Ph), Phenylacetylene (PA), Ph-NMe2) to understand self-assembly properties driven by synergistic non-covalent interactions. Our observations reveal hierarchical self-assembled fibrillar networks with luminescent needles, fibers, and flowers on nano- to micro-meter scales. Subtle changes in substituents led to significant differences: H, Ph, PA, and Ph-NMe2 produced needle-like crystals, dendritic nanofibers, microflakes, and no self-assembly, respectively.

The remediation of wastewaters contaminated with dyes (discharged mainly from industry) is very important for preserving environmental quality and human health. In this study, a new composite chitosan (CS)-based adsorbent combined with activated carbon (AC) and curcumin (Cur) (abbreviated hereafter as CS/AC@Cur) in three different ratios (12.5%, 25%, and 50%) was synthesized for the removal of anionic [reactive black 5 (RB5)] and cationic [methylene blue (MB)] dyes in single-component or binary systems.

A novel synthesis of a nanometric MCM-41 from biogenic silica obtained from rice husk is here presented. CTABr and Pluronic F127 surfactants were employed as templating agents to promote the formation of a long-range ordered 2D-hexagonal structure with cylindrical pores and to limit the particle growth at the nanoscale level thus resulting in a material with uniform particle size of 20-30 nm. The physico-chemical properties of this sample (RH-nanoMCM) were investigated through a multi-technique approach, including PXRD, Si MAS NMR, TEM, -potential and N physisorption analysis at 77 K.

Context: Natural fluorapatite (FAP) has been investigated as an adsorbent for the removal of dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) from aqueous solutions. Effective dye removal is crucial for water treatment, particularly for industrial wastewater containing toxic dyes. FAP, a naturally abundant material, was characterized using XRD, FTIR, and SEM analysis.

In recent years, the use of cationic peptides as alternative drugs with anticancer activity has received attention. In this study, the targeted release of curcumin (Cur) and CM11 peptide alone and together against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was evaluated using chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) coated with Pres1 that target the SB3 antigen of HCC cells (PreS1-Cur-CM11-CS NPs). SB3 protein is the specific antigen of HCC and the PreS1 peptide is a part of the hepatitis B antigen, which can specifically bind to the SB3 protein.
