The design of highly efficient catalysts to enhance the kinetics of oxygen reduction (OER) and oxygen evolution (ORR) reactions is the key issue for the development of high-performance Zn-air battery. In this work, we report the design of Co-CoTe heterostructured fibers as the bifunctional oxygen catalyst for Zn-air battery. Firstly, the theoretical analysis was carried out on Co-CoTe heterostructure. The large work function difference is favorable to construct strong interfacial built-in electric field (BIEF), and the low energy barrier endows high catalytic activities. Moreover, the in-situ grown carbon shell was designed to build "core-shell" Co-CoTe/C unit to realize its high performance. They assemble the Co-CoTe@HFS fiber with good self-supporting and flexible features. Taken the advantages of the strong BIEF, the "core-shell" basic unit, and the freestanding substrate, the Co-CoTe@HFS fiber achieves the good electrocatalytic properties and high reliability. The full Zn-air battery (ZAB) with the Co/CoTe@HFS air cathode achieves the high peak power density and cycling stability over long-term cycling. Therefore, this work provides a clue to design bifunctional oxygen catalysts for high-performance ZABs.

Inhibition of demetalation due to electrochemical dissolution of metal active centers is a major challenge for the real-world commercialization of transition metals and nitrogen co-doped carbon (MNC) material catalysts. This research utilized a microchannel reactor to synthesize zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67, resulting in a CoZn/ZnNC material produced through a core-shell pyrolysis strategy. Direct synergistic interaction of CoZn alloy nanoparticles and ZnNC improves the activity and durability of the oxygen reduction reaction.

Transition metal and metal oxide heterojunctions have been widely studied as bifunctional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries, but the dynamic changes of transition metal oxides and the interface during catalysis are still unclear. Here, bifunctional electrocatalyst of Co─CoNbO is reported, containing lattice interlocked Co nanodots and CoNbO nanorods, which construct a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) interface. Unlike the recognition that transition metals mainly serve as ORR active sites and metal oxides as OER active sites, it is found that both ORR/OER sites originate from CoNbO, while Co acts as an electronic regulatory unit.

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are promising materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Although there have been many theoretical studies of DACs, most of them assumed constant-charge conditions rather than the real electrochemical process of the constant-potential condition. In our work, we investigated Fe-based DACs for ORR and OER bifunctional catalytic performance by using constant-potential first-principles calculations.

A nitrogen-doped carbon-supported circular trough-shaped FeCo alloy-based electrocatalyst (FeCo/NC) was synthesized by a simple-to-accomplish method. The unique alloy structure and rich Fe/Co-N-based active sites constructed during the pyrolysis process endowed FeCo/NC with comparable electrocatalytic ORR activity in both a three-electrode system and Zn-air batteries to that of previously reported FeCo alloy-based catalysts.

Alkaline Zn batteries are currently among the most important energy storage technologies due to their low cost, safety, and high energy density. However, the storage lifespan and reversibility of these batteries are severely restricted by the side reactions of the Zn electrode in the alkaline electrolytes, such as hydrogen evolution, self-corrosion, and uneven Zn deposition. This work addresses these issues by introducing lauryl phosphate potassium (PLP) into the alkaline electrolyte and forming a protective layer adsorbed onto the Zn surface.
