Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of autologous non-cultured non-trypsinized melanocytekeratinocyte grafting (JT) with suction blister membrane as biological dressing in stable vitiligo patches.

Material And Methods: The study was conducted at Mathura Das Mathur Hospital (MDM), Jodhpur, on 43 patches of Stable vitiligo. It was a prospective single-arm interventional study. All patients were examined clinically and history and informed consent were taken before starting the procedure.

Results: About 95% of patches showed >50% repigmentation with 83.72% having good to excellent repigmentation. About 88% of patches showed good color matches with an excellent decline in Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). No serious complication was observed in the present study. The most common complication observed both in the donor and recipient area was pain.

Conclusion: Our study indicates that combining JT with suction blister epidermal grafting is a comparatively effective technique in terms of good repigmentation (≥75% extent of repigmentation), color match, fewer side effects, good patient satisfaction, and DLQI reduction.

Potential execution of vitiligo surgery by the most conceivable technique - which, where, and why?

J Cutan Aesthet Surg

Department of Dermatology, The Humanitarian Clinic: Skin, Hair and Laser Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

While various treatment options exist for vitiligo, surgical interventions have gained significant attention due to their potential for long-lasting repigmentation. Several surgical procedures have been developed, including miniature punch grafting, thin Theirsch's split-thickness skin grafting (STSG), suction blister technique, and ultrathin STSG. The decision-making process should also consider the potential risks and benefits associated with each technique.

Bactogram: Spatial Analysis of Bacterial Colonisation in Epidermal Wounds.

December 2024

Division of Dermatology and Venereology, Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Skin barrier damage and subsequent development of harmful microbiota contribute to conditions such as wound infections, atopic dermatitis and chronic wounds, which impact millions of people globally and pose a significant economic burden on healthcare systems. Established microbial sampling methods, such as swabs and tissue biopsies, provide limited information on the spatial distribution of bacteria. We here describe a new method that produces a visual map of the distribution of cultivable bacteria, denoted 'Bactogram', across the whole wound and surrounding skin, suitable for image-based quantification.

Article Synopsis
  • Phagocytosis is a key immune function of white blood cells (leucocytes), but current models can't measure it in human tissues directly.
  • Researchers developed a new method using intradermal injection of methylene blue-labelled E. coli (MBEC) that allows for the measurement of this process in human skin.
  • The study showed that neutrophils and monocytes from inflamed tissue took up more MB than those in blood, demonstrating the model's potential for various research applications, including understanding phagocyte biology and infection risks in specific populations.

Article Synopsis
  • Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) are both skin conditions that can look similar but stem from different causes: ACD is immune-mediated and ICD results from direct skin damage.
  • Diagnosing these conditions is complicated as traditional methods like visual examination and histopathology are not reliable.
  • Researchers conducted a study to identify specific biological markers by analyzing skin samples, discovering that gene expression differences could help distinguish ACD from ICD with high accuracy (93% sensitivity and specificity).
