Olanzapine is a relatively new antipsychotic agent which appears to be effective in the treatment of both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Reported here is the case of a patient who developed symptoms of mania secondary to treatment with olanzapine. Physicians prescribing olanzapine should be aware of this potential complication.

A 67-year-old male presented with symptoms of mania eight days after switching from sertraline to bupropion. His past medical history included benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, insomnia, and a recent diagnosis of depression. Adverse cutaneous reactions are known to occur with psychotropic medications, which may lead to poor drug compliance. As compared to other group of psychotropics, there is relatively scarce literature on olanzapine-induced skin eruptions. We present a case of a 39-year-old man diagnosed with first episode mania and alcohol dependence syndrome who was started on tablet olanzapine which leads to fixed drug eruptions.

On the other hand, in a number of melatonin studies on sleep cycle, regulation of metabolic abnormalities has been reported.
