Background: Alcoholism increases the risk of skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs). Furthermore, in complicated SSSIs (cSSSIs) alcoholism is associated with delayed treatment response and a higher risk of blood culture positivity, suggesting poor outcomes. In pneumonia and bacteremia alcoholism is linked with higher mortality, longer hospital treatment and more ICU treatment.
Methods: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study including all cases of complicated skin and skin structure infections ( = 460) treated in Gothenburg, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland from 2008 - 2011. Patients were stratified as alcoholics (9%) and non-alcoholics (91%) and patient and disease factors, treatment, and outcomes were compared.
Results: Alcoholics were comparatively younger and more often male, with more liver diseases. We observed higher rates of bacteraemia, intensive care unit admission, surgical intervention, and clinical failure in alcoholics. Alcoholism was associated with longer length of stay and more interdepartmental transfers. We did not observe differences in infection type or time from symptom onset to diagnosis. Mortality was low and equivalent in alcoholics and non-alcoholics.
Conclusions: Alcoholism is associated with increased cSSSI disease severity and resource utilisation.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the collagen fiber structure of the subcutaneous fascia, a connective tissue layer between the skin and epimysium.
Methods: Fascia samples with varying extensibility were examined using biochemical and microscopic methods.
Results: Loose fascia, the more extensible type, displayed sparsely distributed collagen fibers, while dense fascia showed tightly packed collagen fiber bundles.

Background: In malignant melanoma, liver metastases significantly reduce survival, even despite highly effective new therapies. Given the increase in metabolic liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), this study investigated the impact of liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC)-specific alterations in MASLD/MASH on hepatic melanoma metastasis.
Methods: Mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for ten weeks to induce MASH-associated liver fibrosis, or a CDAA diet or a high fat diet (HFD) for shorter periods of time to induce early steatosis-associated alterations.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by protein aggregates mostly consisting of misfolded alpha-synuclein (αSyn). Progressive degeneration of midbrain dopaminergic neurons (mDANs) and nigrostriatal projections results in severe motor symptoms. While the preferential loss of mDANs has not been fully understood yet, the cell type-specific vulnerability has been linked to a unique intracellular milieu, influenced by dopamine metabolism, high demand for mitochondrial activity, and increased level of oxidative stress (OS).

Background: Raynaud syndrome (RS) is a peripheral vasculopathy characterised be impaired acral perfusion typically manifesting as skin discolouration with pallor, cyanosis and/or erythema, and increased sensitivity to cold. RS may be primary or secondary to systemic disease, lifestyle and environmental factors or medication. RS has been reported with medication to treat ADHD, but we found no recent comprehensive overview of the literature.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, formerly Recklinghausen's disease) is a genetic tumor predisposition syndrome in which the mutation of a tumor suppressor gene (neurofibromin) leads to the development of mostly benign neurofibromas of the skin and the central and peripheral nervous systems and malformations or tumors of other organ systems. Patients with NF1 should receive lifelong interdisciplinary care in specialized centers and important treatment decisions should be made by a regularly meeting interdisciplinary panel of experts. Plastic surgery plays an important role in the multidisciplinary management of all clinical forms of NF1-associated peripheral nerve sheath tumors, from cutaneous and subcutaneous to deep nodular and diffuse plexiform neurofibromas.
