AI Article Synopsis

  • Cardiac tamponade is a serious condition requiring immediate attention, highlighted in a case of an elderly woman who developed it following acupuncture therapy.
  • The patient experienced severe chest pain and fainting, leading to a diagnosis of traumatic hemopericardium and acute cardiac tamponade, complicated by cardiogenic shock.
  • Successful ultrasound-guided drainage alleviated her symptoms, stabilized her vital signs, and emphasized the importance of understanding potential complications from acupuncture.

Article Abstract

Cardiac tamponade is a critical cardiovascular condition where timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial. The formation of an intrapericardial hematoma following acupuncture therapy is clinically rare. This paper reports a case of an elderly female patient who experienced severe chest pain and syncope during acupuncture therapy, subsequently diagnosed with traumatic hemopericardium and acute cardiac tamponade, complicated by cardiogenic shock. Under ultrasound guidance, pericardial puncture and drainage were successfully performed. The patient's symptoms were alleviated, her vital signs stabilized, and follow-up outcomes were favorable. This case provides valuable reference for understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of pericardial hemorrhage following acupuncture therapy, integrating both clinical practice and literature review.

Blinding assessment in randomised sham-controlled trials of acupuncture:protocol for a systematic survey.

BMJ Open

January 2025

Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and Chinese Evidence-based Medicine Center, Cochrane China Center and IDEAL China Center, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China

Introduction: Although various sham acupuncture techniques have been employed to ensure blinding in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture, the effectiveness of blinding in these trials and its influence on trial effect size estimates remain unclear. The objectives of this study are the following: (1) to investigate the proportion and study characteristics of sham-controlled trials reporting on blinding assessment, (2) to assess the blinding effectiveness of different types of sham acupuncture, (3) to investigate the relationship between blinding effectiveness and effect sizes in acupuncture RCTs.

Methods And Analysis: We will search PubMed and EMBASE from inception to 1 January 2025 to identify RCTs that compared acupuncture with sham acupuncture in humans with any disease or symptom, with no restrictions on language.

Many patients require a combination of multiple medications to reach targets, but adverse effects and financial burdens undermine adherence. Additionally, prehypertension affects 25%-50% of adults, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Data have matured to support incorporation of integrative oncology modalities into comprehensive cancer care. Clinical practice guidelines have recently been published by ASCO for diet and exercise (2022) and use of cannabinoids and cannabis (2024) and jointly by ASCO and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) for application of integrative approaches in the management of pain (2022), anxiety and depression (2023), and fatigue (2024) among adults with cancer. Following the ASCO-SIO guidelines, clinicians should recommend mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) to patients with symptoms of anxiety or depression and MBIs and exercise for management of fatigue during or after completion of cancer treatment.
