Domain walls (DWs) have been recognized to play crucial roles in various interesting properties and functionalities in quantum materials. A notable example is DWs in charge density wave (CDW), which are believed to provide metallic electron channels for emerging superconductivity. However, electronic states of DWs and the microscopic mechanism toward superconductivity have been elusive. Here, we clarify the atomic/electronic structure of DWs of the chiral CDW emerging in 1-TiSe, using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional calculations. We reveal unambiguously the microscopic origin of chiral CDW as the 2 distortion in Se layers and its interlayer coupling. We further identify unique DWs connecting CDW domains of opposite chirality. The DWs are endowed with no in-gap state due to the characteristic multibands around the band gap, which defies the widely believed notion for CDW DWs. These results provide an important insight into the role of DWs in emerging superconductivity.

Ultrafast Charge Carrier Dynamics in Vanadium Dioxide, VO: Nonequilibrium Contributions to the Photoinduced Phase Transitions.

J Phys Chem Lett

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 22904, United States.

Vanadium oxide (VO) is an exotic phase-change material with diverse applications ranging from thermochromic smart windows to thermal sensors, neuromorphic computing, and tunable metasurfaces. Nonetheless, the mechanism responsible for its metal-insulator phase transition remains a subject of vigorous debate. Here, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the photoinduced phase transition in VO under low perturbation conditions.

Lithium metal batteries are considered the holy grail for next-generation high-energy systems. However, lithium anode faces poor reversibility, unsatisfying cyclability and rate capability due to its uncontrollable plating/stripping behavior. While galvanostatic conditions are extensively studied, the behavior under more realistic application scenarios with variable inputs are less explored.

The poor safety performance of high energy density lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is drawing increasing public concern. To enhance the safety performance on the battery level, it is indispensable to design safe electrolytes that are both non-flammable and low exothermic under abusive conditions. By rational design, a safe localize high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with non-flammability and extremely low exothermicity is formulated.

Key Laboratory of Photonic Materials and Devices Physics for Oceanic Applications, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Harbin Engineering University, Harbin, 150001, China.

The design and synthesis of multifunctional nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention for expanding the range of practical applications. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOFs)-derived NiCoS attached to MXene is rationally designed and constructed for an optical limiter and supercapacitor. The MOF-derived NiCoS enhances the tendency of hydroxyl groups on the MXene surface to attract metal ions, resulting in the formation of sulfur vacancies.

High-Density CuBiO Photocathodes Using Well-Textured Buffer Layers and Their Unassisted Solar Hydrogen Production Performances.

School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, 2066, Seobu-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, 16419, Republic of Korea.

Solar hydrogen production using photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells requires the selection of cost-effective materials with high photoactivity and durability. CuBiO photocathodes possess an appropriate bandgap for efficient hydrogen production. However, their performance is limited by poor charge transport and interface voids formed due to the porous structure during annealing, which complicates the deposition of passivation overlayers.
