Ocular diseases create a significant economic burden and decrease in quality of life worldwide. Drugs and carrier molecules that penetrate ocular tissues after intravenous administration are needed for more efficient and patient-friendly treatment of ocular diseases. Here, ocular barrier-penetrating aptamers were selected through the utilization of SELEX and intravenous injection in rats. Three aptamers-Apt1, Apt2, and Apt5-were chosen based on their specific accumulation in vascularized ocular tissues and further characterized for their biodistribution using quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (RT-qPCR). A statistically significant difference between ΔCt values of ocular and control tissues with Apt2 ( < 0.0001) and Apt5 ( < 0.0001) was observed. Interestingly, Apt1 was the most abundant aptamer in the sequencing pool, but it did not show a statistically significant difference in biodistribution between ocular and control tissues. Overall, this study established a functional SELEX method for discovering ocular tissue targeting aptamers.

Purpose: Although the lens undoubtedly plays a major role in presbyopia, altered lens function could be in part secondary to age-related changes of the ciliary muscle. Ciliary muscle changes with accommodation have been quantified using optical coherence tomography, but so far these studies have been limited to quantifying changes in ciliary muscle thickness, mostly at static accommodative states. Quantifying ciliary muscle thickness changes does not effectively capture the dynamic anterior-centripetal movement of the ciliary muscle during accommodation.

Bilateral anophthalmia, a clinical condition characterized by the absence of globe and ocular tissues from both the orbits, presents considerable challenges to a patient's daily routine and use of prostheses. The patient's inability to orientate custom ocular prostheses (COPs) 3-dimensionally is understandable, and they typically rely on caregivers to manage the prostheses and prevent inadvertent injury to the socket. This clinical report describes the successful integration of braille script into COPs as a solution to these challenges by improving prosthesis management, decreasing caregiver dependence, and encouraging independence.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether lacrimal gland tissue stiffness can aid in diagnosing dry eye disease (DED) using shear wave elastography (SWE).
