Background: Pharmacological treatment is a cornerstone of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, with general practitioners providing the most care. However, the lack of data on prescribing trends in initial pharmacotherapy in primary care hinders the understanding of how scientific and technical developments impact patient care and may also perpetuate suboptimal practices. Hence, this study aims to analyze trends in the initial pharmacological treatment of newly diagnosed COPD patients in Dutch primary care from 2010 to 2021.

Background: Inhalers are widely used for the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, there is little knowledge about the extent to which an inhaler is used and when it is disposed of, despite the implications for an individual's health (when used beyond the recommended number of doses (overused)), and medicine wastage, healthcare costs and the environment (when discarded with remaining doses (underused)). To explore inhaler use, we assessed the number of doses remaining in pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) returned via a Chiesi Inhaler Recycling scheme.

Development of a nano-specific safe-by-design module to identify risk management strategies.

Ann Work Expo Health

December 2024

TNO Research Group Risk Analysis for Prevention, Innovation and Development, Princetonlaan 6, PO Box 80015, Utrecht 3584 CB, The Netherlands.

This article describes the development of a Safe-by-Design (SbD) module and its integration into an easy-to-use tool, named the Nano Exposure Quantifier-Safe-by-Design (NEQ-SbD) tool. The NEQ-SbD tool guides its user to lower the exposure to nanomaterials at the worksite where nanomaterials are manipulated or handled during a wide range of activities. This allows the tool user with an informed decision to assess airborne exposure and to select, compare, and identify appropriate risk management measures (RMM).

The impact of COPD screening on US primary care clinician behavior and patient outcomes is unclear. Assess the impact of receiving CAPTURE (COPD Assessment in Primary Care to Identify Undiagnosed Respiratory Disease and Exacerbation Risk) screening scores on clinical and patient outcomes. Cluster randomized trial included 49 usual care (COPD education only) and 51 intervention (COPD and CAPTURE education plus screening scores) primary care practices.

Respiratory failure in a patient with exhaled nitric oxide >300 ppb and subsequent response to dupilumab.

Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent)

August 2024

North Texas Allergy and Asthma Associates and Division of Allergy/Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, USA.

Multiple biologic agents are approved for the treatment of severe persistent asthma not controlled by inhaled corticosteroid/beta-agonist therapy. Appropriate phenotyping can aid in picking the right biologic for the right patient. Here is a unique case of a patient with severe asthma and respiratory arrest, with fraction of exhaled nitric oxide >300 ppb whose asthma became completely controlled with dupilumab.
