Purpose: Highly sensitized patients (HSPs) with kidney failure have limited access to kidney transplantation and poorer post-transplant outcomes. Prioritizing HSPs in kidney allocation systems and expanding the pool of deceased donors available to them has helped to reduce their wait times for transplant and enhanced post-transplant outcomes. The Canadian HSP Program was established by Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with provincial organ donation and transplantation programs throughout the country to increase transplant opportunities for transplant candidates needing very specific matches from deceased kidney donors.

Indeed, accurate and rapid diagnostic for patients with suspected genetic kidney diseases is not only important for prognosis and patient management but also for family counseling. Alport syndrome, a genetic disease primarily affecting the basement membrane, is characterized by hematuria, progressive kidney failure, hearing impairment, as well as ocular abnormalities and stems from mutations in genes encoding type IV collagen.

Acute renal failure secondary to medicinal plants is common in countries where the use of traditional phytotherapy is preponderant. Although the nephrotoxic potentials of some herbal preparations have been well characterized, the use of many medicinal plants is still considered largely safe, often relying on weak evidence. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old patient with severe acute renal failure, associated to an esophagitis with erosive gastritis as well as an inflammatory anemia, with no obvious etiology.
