Article Abstract
The presence of a small spirocyclic ring at an adjacent position alters the conformational preference for equatorial substitution in six-membered rings. DFT calculations and low-temperature H NMR experiments demonstrate that alkyl groups larger than methyl possess negative A-values when geminal to a spirocyclopropane, with larger groups such as isopropyl and -butyl being exclusively axial at -78 °C. Similar effects are found for heteroatoms, including halogens, and for a range of other electron-withdrawing substituents. Similar effects are observed for other strained rings (epoxide, cyclobutane, oxetane) and the concepts extend to acyclic models as well as heterocycles such as piperidines and piperazines. The origin of the effect is traced to an increase in torsional strain in combination with hyperconjugative effects in the case of electron-poor groups.

Silyl-phenanthroline (NN'Si) ligand ancillary iridium-catalyzed C(sp)-H borylation is investigated theoretically. Density functional theory calculations clearly disclose that the (NN'Si)Ir(H)(Bpin) (NN'Si = 6-[(di--butylsilyl)methyl]-1,10-phenanthroline) complex is a resting state, and the (NN'Si)Ir(Bpin) complex serves as an active species in the catalytic cycle. The remarkably high activity of this type of a catalyst arises from the rapid reductive elimination of HBpin from (NN'Si)Ir(H)(Bpin) to generate the active species (NN'Si)Ir(Bpin).

An efficient and highly enantioselective synthesis of tipranavir is realized based on an iridium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution. High yield and diastereoselectivity (>20:1), as well as excellent enantioselectivity (99% ), were obtained for the key intermediate through direct asymmetric alkylation reaction of dihydropyranone with allylic -butyl carbonate. Anti-AIDS drug of tipranavir was finally accomplished in 8 steps and 6 pots starting from commercially available 1-phenyl-3-hexanone in 20.

While free radical polymerization methods are employed frequently to prepare sub-micron polymer particles, we hypothesized that surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) methodology may prove beneficial for obtaining functional polymer particles by solution polymerization methods that preclude the need for conventional surfactants. To test the effectiveness of SFEP for the preparation of functional colloids, solution polymerization of several monomers, including propargyl acrylate (PA), styrene (Sty) and tert-butyl acrylate (t-BA), was performed over a range of monomer ratios and reaction scales. Electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy were employed to evaluate the outcome of SFEP for particle size, shape, surface anisotropy, and chemical composition.
