Gelsolin is the prototypical member of a family of Ca-activated F-actin severing and capping proteins. Here we report structures of Ca-bound human gelsolin at the barbed end of F-actin. One structure reveals gelsolin's six domains (G1G6) and interdomain linkers wrapping around F-actin, while another shows domains G1G3-a fragment observed during apoptosis-binding on both sides of F-actin. Conformational changes that trigger severing occur on one side of F-actin with G1G6 and on both sides with G1G3. Gelsolin remains bound after severing, blocking subunit exchange.

Quasi-2D perovskites have been pivotal in recent efforts to stabilize perovskite solar cells. Despite the stability boost provided when these materials are introduced in perovskite solar cells, little is known about the intrinsic light and environmental stability of quasi-2D perovskites. In this study, we characterize the photostability of exfoliated quasi-2D perovskite single crystals in air using photoluminescence, infrared, X-ray fluorescence, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

This study aimed to evaluate the pulp response to F18 and cobalt-doped F18 bioglass (F18Co) in comparison with calcium hydroxide (CH) after pulp capping. The maxillary first molars of 48 rats were divided into F18, F18Co, CH, and control (no intervention) groups. The pulp was exposed, the materials were placed, and the teeth were capped.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of a new gene therapy, Etranacogene dezaparvovec (EDZ), for severe hemophilia B, comparing it to the traditional treatment, factor IX (FIX) prophylaxis over a lifetime perspective in the U.S.
  • - Results show that despite EDZ costing $3.5 million, it offers lifetime savings of $11 million and slightly improves quality of life by 0.64 QALYs compared to FIX, which has very high annual costs.
  • - The cost-effectiveness of EDZ is influenced significantly by capping annual cost offsets, emphasizing how these limits can help balance price and value for healthcare systems.

Article Synopsis
  • - Huanglongbing disease (HLB) is a serious threat to the 'Kinnow' mandarin in Pakistan, caused by a bacterial species and spread by the Asian citrus psyllid insect.
  • - The study explored the use of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) synthesized from garlic extract to enhance fruit quality and antioxidant defenses in HLB-infected 'Kinnow' plants, finding that a 75 mg/L concentration significantly improved various fruit characteristics and antioxidant enzyme levels.
  • - Proteomics analysis showed that SeNPs affected the expression of proteins related to growth and stress response, indicating that their application can improve the nutritional quality and overall health of HLB-affected mandarin fruit.

Article Synopsis
  • Actin cytoskeleton assembly is crucial for cell movement and muscle contraction, with formins being key proteins that help in the creation and maintenance of actin filaments.
  • The FHOD-family of formins, particularly FHOD3L, is essential for developing sarcomeres in heart cells (cardiomyocytes), yet its precise functions are not fully understood.
  • Research shows that FHOD3L is involved in nucleating and briefly elongating actin filaments, and its elongation activity is vital for proper sarcomere structure and function, which has implications for understanding heart muscle diseases.
