Buckybowls, bowl-shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbons, have received intensive interest owing to their multifaceted potentials in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Buckybowls possess unique chemical and physical properties associated with their concave and convex faces. In view of the shape complementarity, which is one of the key factors for host-guest assembly, buckybowls are ideal receptors for fullerenes. In fact, the host-guest assembly between buckybowls and fullerenes is one of the most active topics in buckybowls chemistry, and the resulting supramolecular materials show promising applications in optoelectronics, biomaterials, and so forth. In this tutorial review, we present an overview for the progress on fullerene receptors based on buckybowls over the last decade.

Fullerenols, a water-soluble polyhydroxy derivative of fullerene, hold promise in medical and materials science due to their unique properties. However, concerns about their potential embryotoxicity remain. Using a pregnancy mouse model and metabolomics analysis, our findings reveal that fullerenols exposure during pregnancy not only significantly reduced mice placental weight and villi thickness, but also altered the classes and concentrations of metabolites in the mouse placenta.

A mounting number of studies have been documenting strong pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic effects of carbon nanotube (CNT). However, the molecular mechanisms of single-walled CNT (SWCNT)-provoked lung injury remain to be elucidated. Here, we established a mice model of SWCNT-induced lung injury by intratracheal instillation and found that C5a-C5a receptor-1 (C5aR1) signaling was significantly activated along with abundant neutrophils recruitment in lungs at early phase post SWCNT administration, which were positively correlated with early lung inflammation and late pulmonary fibrosis.

Introduction And Objective: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters the nasal cavity, penetrates the nasal epithelial cells through the interaction of its spike protein with the host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and then triggers a cytokine storm. We aimed to assess the biocompatibility of fullerenol nanoparticles C(OH) and ectoine, and to document their effect on the protection of primary human nasal epithelial cells (HNEpCs) against the effects of interaction with the fragment of virus - spike protein. This preliminary research is the first step towards the construction of a intranasal medical device with a protective, mechanical function against SARS-CoV-2 similar to that of personal protective equipment (eg masks).
