Screening sites for detection of carbapenemase-producers- a retrospective cohort study.

Antimicrob Resist Infect Control

December 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control, Hospital Epidemiology, University Hospital Basel, University Basel, Petersgraben 4, CH-4031, Basel, Switzerland.

While screening the rectal site and urine may be appropriate for detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales, respiratory samples, throat and wound swabs may increase the sensitivity of screening protocols when aiming to detect colonization with carbapenemase-producing non-fermenting bacteria. Our results support the need for tailoring screening recommendations according to the bacterial species targeted.

Background: Primary healthcare has emerged as a powerful global concept, but little attention has been directed towards the pivotal role of the healthcare workforce and the diverse institutional setting in which they work. This study aims to bridge the gap between the primary healthcare policy and the ongoing healthcare workforce crisis debate by introducing a health system and governance approach to identify capacities that may help respond effectively to the HCWF crisis in health system contexts.

Methods: A qualitative comparative methodology was employed, and a rapid assessment of the primary healthcare workforce was conducted across nine countries: Denmark, Germany, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom/ England.

Self-supervised denoising of grating-based phase-contrast computed tomography.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Research Group Biomedical Imaging Physics, Department of Physics, TUM School of Natural Sciences, Technical University of Munich, 85748, Garching, Germany.

In the last decade, grating-based phase-contrast computed tomography (gbPC-CT) has received growing interest. It provides additional information about the refractive index decrement in the sample. This signal shows an increased soft-tissue contrast.

The translation of cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) into biogenic gene delivery systems is limited by relatively inefficient loading strategies. In this work, the loading of various nucleic acids into small EVs via their spontaneous hybridization with preloaded non-lamellar liquid crystalline lipid nanoparticles (LCNPs), forming hybrid EVs (HEVs) is described. It is demonstrated that LCNPs undergo pH-dependent structural transitions from inverse hexagonal (H) phases at pH 5 to more disordered non-lamellar phases, possibly inverse micellar (L) or sponge (L) phases, at pH 7.
