Analytical microscopy techniques using coaxial and oblique illuminations to detect thin glass particulates generated from glass vials for parenteral drug products. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Glass vials are the most widely used primary containers for the packaging of parenteral products due to their optical clarity, general inertness, and hermetic properties, but under certain circumstances, they can pose safety concerns. Most of these issues are related to the potential formation of glass particulates through delamination or precipitation, resulting from the chemical interaction between the drug product and the inner surface of the glass vial. Hence, it is imperative for pharmaceutical companies to conduct product-vial compatibility studies to determine the appropriate packaging/container closure system. To support this development activity, scientists need to develop analytical methods to detect subvisible glass particulates in parenteral products, along with the appropriate positive controls, to facilitate detection and identification. This paper outlines the utilization of coaxial/episcopic and oblique illumination microscopy, combined with spectroscopic techniques, to detect thin glass particulates generated from a modified procedure. It also showcases the importance of angle-dependent lighting in visualizing positive control samples containing thin glass particulates. The analytical microscopy techniques discussed in this paper can assist scientists in selecting suitable container closure systems for developing parenteral products.

The study examined the use of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/castor oil (CO) electrospun membranes, focusing on how CNCs influenced membrane properties for aerosol filtration applications. PET membranes were fabricated using 5 wt% and 10 wt% of CNCs and 2.5 wt% CO to assess its effectiveness as a compatibilizing agent, under a solution flow rate of 25.

Validation of a laboratory spray generation system and its use in a comparative study of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) evaluation methods.

Environ Sci Process Impacts

November 2024

Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST), Qc, Canada.

Isocyanates are well-known irritants and sensitizers, and measuring their occupational airborne exposure is challenging due to their high chemical reactivity and semi-volatile nature. This study builds on a previous publication by our team that focused on comparing evaluation methods for isocyanates. The current research aims at developing, validating, and applying a laboratory generation system designed to replicate real-world conditions for spraying clear coats in autobody shops using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)-based products.

Contamination of consumer composts by metals, microplastics and other microscopic debris.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

October 2024

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, PL4 8AA, UK.

Very little information exists on the particle and chemical contamination of consumer (horticultural) composts. In this study, anthropogenic microcellulosics (AMCs), microplastics (MPs) and other microscopic debris, along with anthropogenically impacted metals (Cu, Zn, Pb), have been determined in 12 composts (seven garden composts and five growbags) purchased at outlets in the UK. AMCs and MPs, determined microscopically, were present in all samples at up to about 1100 kg dw.

Construction of Vine-Inspired Antimicrobial Filter with Multiscale 3D Nanonetwork for High-Efficiency Air Filtration.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, People's Republic of China.

Enhancing the antimicrobial activity of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters while maintaining filtration efficiency and pressure drop is currently an urgent issue for preventing the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. Herein, inspired by vines which can enwind fences to fix as well as decorate them, a flexible antimicrobial chitin nanofiber (ChNF@CuO) was fabricated and loaded onto the rigid glass fiber (GF) skeleton of a HEPA filter. Through the physical interaction, ChNF@CuO was spontaneously enwound on GF, and ChNF@CuO itself interweaved to form a new nanonetwork between the GF skeleton.
