Nanostructured materials derived from sustainable sources are of interest as viable alternatives to traditional petroleum-derived sources in membrane applications due to environmental concerns. Here, we present the development of pore size-tunable nanostructured polymer membranes based on a plant-derived material. The membranes were fabricated using a tri-functional amine as the templating core species and a cross-linkable ligand synthesized from rose oil-derived citronellol. The self-assembly of a supramolecular complex between the template core and the ligand forms a hexagonally packed columnar (Col) mesophase, the dimensions of which can be precisely controlled by changing the stoichiometric ratio between these constituents. Within the hexagonal mesophase stoichiometric range, the pore size of the nanostructured membranes can be tuned from 1.0 to 1.3 nm, with a step size of approximately 0.1 nm. The membranes exhibited a clear distinction in molecular size selectivity, as demonstrated by dye adsorption experiments. The membrane fabricated with a ligand-to-core ratio of 3 to 1 demonstrated shape-based selectivity, exhibiting a higher permeability for propeller-shaped penetrants and highlighting its potential for shape-selective transport. We anticipate that this straightforward approach, using plant-derived materials, can contribute to important sustainability aspects while enhancing the performance of current state-of-the-art nanostructured membranes by enabling precise control over pore size.

In this paper, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer membrane modified glassy carbon electrode for electrochemical sensors (MIP-OH-MWCNTs-GCE) for epinephrine (EP) was successfully prepared by a gel-sol method using an optimized functional monomer oligosilsesquioxane-AlO sol-ITO composite sol (ITO-POSS-AlO). Hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OH-MWCNTs) were introduced during the modification of the electrodes, and the electrochemical behavior of EP on the molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors was probed by the differential pulse velocity (DPV) method. The experimental conditions were optimized.

Novel therapeutic delivery systems and delivery methods to the inner ear are necessary to treat hearing loss and inner ear disorders. However, numerous barriers exist to therapeutic delivery into the bone-encased and immune-privileged environment of the inner ear and cochlea, which makes treating inner ear disorders challenging. Nanoparticles (NPs) are a type of therapeutic delivery system that can be engineered for multiple purposes, and posterior semicircular canal (PSCC) infusion is a method to directly deposit them into the cochlea.

This study aimed to investigate whether the water-soluble pharmaceutical form of phosphatidylcholine nanoparticles (wPC) stimulated the catalytic activity of CYP enzymes 2C9 and 2D6. We have shown that electroenzymatic CYP2C9 catalysis to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug naproxen as a substrate was enhanced from 100% to 155% in the presence of wPC in media. Electroenzymatic CYP2D6 activity in the presence of the adrenoceptor-blocking agent bisoprolol as a substrate was elevated significantly from 100% to 144% when wPC was added to potassium phosphate buffer solution.

Article Synopsis
  • Polymers with ion-conduction abilities are crucial for water purification, acting as membranes that selectively transport ions while being mechanically strong.
  • The review emphasizes the benefits of acidic polymers, particularly those with phosphonic acid groups, for effectively adsorbing toxic metals and highlights their superior performance compared to sulfonated polymers.
  • It also notes the potential of temperature- and pH-responsive polymers for controlled water treatment, suggesting that with further development, phosphonated and other acid-functionalized polymers could become the preferred materials for water purification processes.

The evaluation of chlorhexidine-carrier nanosystems based on iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (IOMNPs), has gained significant attention in recent years due to the unique properties of the magnetic nanoparticles (NPSs). Chlorhexidine (CHX), a well-established antimicrobial agent, has been widely used in medical applications, including oral hygiene and surgical antisepsis. This study aims to report an in vitro and in ovo toxicological screening of the synthesized CHX-NPS nanosystem, of the carrier matrix (maghemite NPSs) and of the drug to be delivered (CHX solution), by employing two types of cell lines-HaCaT immortalized human keratinocytes and JB6 Cl 41-5a murine epidermal cells.
