Single-cell approaches have shone a spotlight on discrete context-specific tissue macrophage states, deconstructed to their most minute details. Foucault and medicine: challenging normative claims.

Med Health Care Philos

December 2023

Department. of Urology, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.

Some of Michel Foucault's work focusses on an archeological and genealogical analysis of certain aspects of the medical episteme, such as 'Madness and Civilization' (1964/2001), 'The Birth of the Clinic' (1973) and 'The History of Sexuality' (1978/2020a). These and other Foucauldian works have often been invoked to characterize, but also to normatively interpret mechanisms of the currently existing medical episteme. Writers conclude that processes of patient objectification, power, medicalization, observation and discipline are widespread in various areas where the medical specialty operates and that these aspects have certain normative implications for how our society operates or should operate.

Context: Shunfa Jiao, the founder of the major school of scalp acupuncture (SA), and several other authors, have speculated that SA can effectively treat diseases or disorders through needling of the external scalp zones projected from the cerebral cortex's internal function zones that are directly underneath.

Objective: The review intended to analyze and discuss the historical development of Jiao's SA system, the composition of Jiao's SA stimulation zones, and the projection of the cerebral cortex's function zones on the scalp, to correct the shortcomings and inaccuracies of Jiao's hypothesis and accelerate the development of SA and its clinical application based on solid evidence.

Design: The research team performed a narrative review based on the literature currently available.
