Traumatic brain injuries are increasingly common in older adults and represent a substantial source of morbidity and mortality for this population. In addition to the impact from the primary insult, TBI can lead to a variety of chronic neurocognitive conditions including dementia, depression, and sleep disturbances. When caused by TBI, these conditions differ importantly from their non-TBI-related counterparts. Much about how TBI relates to the development of these conditions is unknown, and more research is needed to further elucidate optimal treatment strategies.

Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective for treating depression, schizophrenia, and mania, cognitive adverse effects may limit use. One possible mechanism for these effects includes cholinergic transmission alterations, supporting potential use of cholinesterase inhibitors for prevention and treatment of these cognitive deficits. The objective of this review is to determine efficacy and safety of cholinesterase inhibitors clinically used for dementia in reducing ECT cognitive adverse effects.
Introduction: Family members caring for a person living with dementia (PWD) can experience caregiver burden, leading to psychological distress if unmanaged. It's essential for healthcare professionals, especially nurses to identify caregivers at risk of stress and depression, triggering prompt management during their contact with caregivers of PWD. The study team developed an evidence-based caregiver burden-mastery hybrid assessment and intervention decision matrix (CHAT-MI) for caregivers of PWD and examined its feasibility of use.
