This retrospective, real-life cohort was analyzed to detect the frequency of different HRM evolution patterns and their correlation with MNV types, morphological and functional changes in exudative nAMD under long-term anti-VEGF therapy. We evaluated optical coherence tomography (OCT) volume scans in 143 eyes of 94 nAMD patients (start of anti-VEGF therapy 2009-2018, therapy until the last visit) and recorded the VA at all visits. HRM evolution patterns were differentiated: pattern 1 = no HRM, pattern 2 = subretinal HRM resolved during follow-up, pattern 3 = persistent subretinal HRM with new HRM-boundary remodeling [BR], pattern 4 = persistent subretinal HRM without HRM-BR.

Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is an autosomal dominant disorder with a heterogeneous clinical presentation which may include macrocytic anemia typically presenting in the first year of life, growth retardation, and congenital malformations in 30%-50% of patients. This phenotypic variability is partially explained by genotype-phenotype correlations, with several ribosomal protein genes implicated in this disorder. Most cases are due to de novo variants, but familial occurrences highlight variable expressivity and reduced penetrance.

Background: Restorative justice (RJ) is an ethical lens that places emphasis on a community's connection and proliferative impact of actions, promoting communication and establishing methods for accountability. RJ practices can be applied on a spectrum, including proactive community-building practices, community discussions in response to an event, and restorative conferences addressing specific incidences of harm. This article describes an intervention that utilized RJ community-building practices within a medical education environment and evaluates its acceptability and feasibility.

Multiphysics modelling of the impact of skin deformation and strain on microneedle-based transdermal therapeutic delivery.

Acta Biomater

December 2024

UCD Centre for Biomedical Engineering, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland; School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland; UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology, School of Medicine, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland; The Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. Electronic address:

Microneedle patches (MNs) hold enormous potential to facilitate the minimally-invasive delivery of drugs and vaccines transdermally. However, the micro-mechanics of skin deformation significantly influence the permeation of therapeutics through the skin. Previous studies often fail to appreciate the complexities in microneedle-skin mechanical interactions.

The Development of Legal Rights for Intersex Persons: Part I: The Diversity of Intersex Conditions.

Behav Sci Law

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, School of Medicine, Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.

As the nature of transgender condition becomes better understood and the legal rights of transgender individuals are defined through court decisions and legislation, intersexuality ought not be overlooked. Potential commonalities as well as differences between intersexual and transgender individuals, clinically and psychosexually, may be mutually informing and relevant to their legal rights in ways that could implicate mental health services. In this review, the concepts of intersexuality and Disorders of Sexual Development are defined followed by a brief synopsis of the evolution of ancient conception of hermaphroditism into the vastly heterogenous biological conditions of today referred to as DSDs.
