Aims: To determine the psychometric properties of the Slovenian versions of the Diabetes Empowerment Scale (DES), both the long form (S-DES-LF) and the short form (S-DES-SF).

Methods: Between April and September 2023, we recruited adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) using convenient sampling in five primary health centres. We examined internal consistency, test-retest reliability, criterion validity, and discriminant validity. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) evaluated the fit of the one-and three-factor models for S-DES-SF and S-DES-LF, respectively.

Results: The results of 288 individuals, with a mean age of 67 ± 9.2 years, including 132 men and 156 women, showed excellent internal consistency and strong test-retest reliability for both the S-DES-LF (Cronbach's α=0.90; ICC=0.95) and S-DES-SF (α=0.91; ICC=0.92). Criterion validity of the S-DES-LF was confirmed through known-groups validity, with higher education (p=0.016) and absence of comorbid hypertension (p=0.034) associated with greater empowerment. Discriminant validity was demonstrated by the lack of significant correlations between the S-DES-LF and S-DES-SF scores with age or gender. CFA confirmed a good fit for the S-DES-SF's one-factor model but not for S-DES-LF three-factor model.

Conclusions: S-DES-LF and S-DES-SF are valid and reliable tools for assessing diabetes empowerment in Slovenian people with T2D. Future research should further explore the convergent validity of scales.

Aim:  Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent disease in the Portuguese population and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Its proper therapeutic management is multifactorial, with lifestyle habits having a major impact. Studies show that poorer metabolic control is associated with deficient knowledge related to diabetes, lower self-efficacy, and limited patient empowerment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines a new healthcare model in New Zealand that combines a low-carbohydrate diet and health coaching to help manage prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Participants reported health benefits like weight loss and increased energy, while also facing challenges such as resistance from some healthcare providers and misconceptions about low-carb diets.
  • The model shows promise for improving patient outcomes and reducing the workload on healthcare professionals, though further education and awareness are needed for wider adoption.

Living with chronic conditions like diabetes mellitus (DM) or insulin resistance (IR) requires significant self-management, adding to daily life stressors. This stress, known as diabetes distress, along with health empowerment from proper diet and lifestyle, and motivation to eat healthily, greatly impacts quality of life and disease outcomes. Different patient subgroups (type 1 diabetic (T1DM), type 2 diabetic (T2DM), and insulin resistant (IR) individuals) face these challenges differently.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) frequently coexists with cardiorenal complications. Therefore, a holistic approach to patient management is required, with specialists such as primary care physicians, cardiologists, endocrinologists, and nephrologists working together to provide patient care. Although glycemic control is important in the management of T2D, patients with T2D and acceptable glycemic control are still at risk from cardiovascular (CV) events such as stroke, heart attack, and heart failure (HF).
